Job Specification

  COMPACTOR TRUCK DRIVER

  DEFINITION:

       Under direction drives, cleans, services and makes minor repairs
  to a compactor truck; occasionally may perform manual and unskilled
  laboring work in connection with driving the compactor truck; does
  related work as required.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK:

       Drives a compactor truck on assigned route.

       Operates hydraulic lift apparatus used for loading debris onto
  truck and hydraulic mechanism for compacting debris.

       Drives to landfill or other designated area and dumps refuse.

       Keeps check on gauges for hydraulic pumps and other mechanisms.

       May be required to assist in loading compactor truck.

       Cleans and greases compactor truck; makes minor repairs to
  compactor truck; keeps necessary records.

       May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
  and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
  office, or related units.

  REQUIREMENTS:

       EXPERIENCE:

           One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with a gross
  vehicle weight of at least 26,000 pounds and with auxiliary equipment
  such as a snow plow, salt spreader, power take-off winch, lift body or
  hydraulic lifting device.

       LICENSE:

           Appointee must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License
  (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle
  being operated.

           NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess
  the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and
  type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.


       KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

           Knowledge of the care and maintenance and competent, safe and
  efficient operation of compactor trucks, including cleaning and
  lubricating, servicing of batteries, care of tires and of minor repair
  procedures.

           Knowledge of the use of airbrakes, of the proper method of
  double clutching a transmission when shifting, and of the hydraulic
  system that operates the lift and compactor mechanism.

           Ability to analyze problems involving the operation of large
  trucks.

           Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and
  written directions.

           Ability to learn from explanations and/or demonstrations.

           Ability to drive large trucks in a skilled and safe manner.

           Ability to check, clean, service, and make minor emergency
  repairs to trucks.

           Ability to keep necessary records.

           Ability to properly shift a five (5) speed transmission, to
  recognize when hydraulic system is low on oil, to add proper amount 
  of oil when needed, and to properly read controlling gauges to prevent
  damage to equipment or injury to personnel.

           Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
  manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
  office, or related units.

           Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
  English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American
  Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
  forms of communication.
