JUVENILE OFFICER
DEFINITION
Under direction, acts on complaints of police officials, school
authorities, social agencies, and private citizens by conducting
investigations of suspected violations by juveniles; does other
related duties and typing.

SPECIAL SKILL
Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate
in Spanish and English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Investigations the home, living conditions, neighborhood,
environment, school records, employment history, and recreational
habits of juvenile offenders.
Interviews juveniles, parents, teachers, and others to gather
facts and information.
Institutes complaint actions against juveniles, and files
complaints with appropriate county/municipal officials.
Prepares and presents juvenile cases to county judge.
May aid other law enforcement and social service agencies
concerned with juvenile offenders.
Recommends referrals of juveniles to appropriate social service
agencies.
Gives talks to juveniles/adults on problems of juvenile
delinquency.
Prepares reports and correspondence.
Maintains records and files.
Types documents from varied forms of copy.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in work involving social or
other types of investigation.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of sources and methods of obtaining information.
Ability to establish and maintain relationships with juveniles,
parents, employers, schools, and that portion of the public
interested in or concerned with the work of the agency.
Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports of
investigations.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable
forms of communication.
