Job Specification

  RADIO TECHNICIAN

  JOB CATEGORY SUMMARY

   A position in this job category typically repairs and troubleshoots
   problems with police paging systems and with FM radio transmitters and
   receivers; repairs radar speed detection equipment and electrical
   components; operates signal, audio signal, and voltage generators;
   repairs, operates, and tests mobile radio and base station
   communications equipment.

   CHARACTERISTIC TASKS

   the duties which may be performed.

   Repairs police paging systems, and radar speed detection equipment

   Repairs FM radio transmitters and receivers, and electrical components

   Operates signal, audio signal, and voltage generators

   Adjusts equipment to manufacturer's specifications

   Operates oscilloscopes and dual trace oscilloscopes

   Operates frequency counters, signal tracers, logic analyzers, curve
   tracers, and voltage regulators

   Tests mobile radio and base station communications equipment

   Operates volt or ohm meters

   Repairs mobile radio and base station communications equipment

   Tests electronic circuitry

   Operates resistance and calibration potentiometers

   Operates mobile radio and base station communications equipment

   Troubleshoots problems with police paging systems, and with FM radio
   transmitters and receivers
   Adjusts radio frequencies

   Operates a motor vehicle

   Installs computer board components

   Repairs microprocessors, audiovisual equipment, and electronic medical
   equipment

   Monitors network frequencies

   Schedules maintenance or repair

   Interprets charts and graphs, schematics, and blueprints or floorplans

   Monitors the use of materials, equipment, parts or supplies

   Establishes unit work procedures and priorities

   Implements programs of preventive maintenance

   Conducts in-service training

   Writes narrative letters or reports

   CHARACTERISTIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

   Knowledge of standard English grammar; for example, syntax,
   punctuation, verb agreement, or tense

   Knowledge of procedures for operating mobile radio and base station
   communications equipment

   Knowledge of procedures for testing mobile radio and base station
   communications equipment

   Knowledge of procedures for operating curve and signal tracers, logic
   analyzers, and frequency counters

   Knowledge of procedures for testing audiovisual equipment, and
   electronic circuitry

   Knowledge of the theory and principles of electronics, and of
   electricity

   Knowledge of procedures for testing radar speed detection equipment

   Knowledge of procedures for installing FM radio transmitters and
   receivers, electronic medical equipment, and microprocessors

   Knowledge of transistor and solid-state circuitry theory and principles

   Knowledge of frequency ranges and electronic component color codes

   Knowledge of procedures for operating oscilloscopes, and dual trace
   oscilloscopes

   Knowledge of procedures for operating volt or ohm meters

   Knowledge of procedures for operating signal, audio signal, and voltage
   generators.

   Knowledge of procedures for operating calibration and resistance
   potentiometers

   Knowledge of preventive maintenance

   Knowledge of inventory control

   Knowledge of training principles and techniques

   Skill in operating a motor vehicle

   Ability to troubleshoot problems with FM radio transmitters and
   receivers

   Ability to measure frequency ranges

   Ability to troubleshoot problems with radar speed detection equipment

   Ability to write at the reading level of the targeted audience

   Ability to design schematics from raw data

   Ability to repair computer board components.
   Ability to troubleshoot problems with audio-visual equipment

   Ability to troubleshoot problems with computer board components

   Ability to troubleshoot problems with electronic medical equipment

   Ability to design blueprints or floorplans from raw data

   Ability to establish goals and set priorities

   MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

   EDUCATION:

   Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree in 
   electronics or radio communications.

   OR

   Successful completion of 60 college credits in any combination of  
   electronics and/or radio communication coursework.

   EXPERIENCE:

   Four (4) years of experience in work involving operating and
   maintaining radio communications equipment.

   SUBSTITUTION

   Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute
   additional experience as indicated on a year for year basis.

   LICENSE

   Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
   New Jersey.

   The appointing authority may require applicants to possess licenses
   or certification specific to radio operation and repair.
