SUPERVISING ANIMAL ATTENDANT
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises a group of animal attendants involved
in the care, feeding, and grooming of dogs, cats, or other
animals; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and
evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the
effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and
disciplining of subordinates.
Supervises personnel engaged in feeding/watering dogs, cats, and
other animals and in cleaning of cages and pens.
Ensures that buildings, offices, and grounds are cleaned and
maintained.
Trains personnel in the care and feeding of animals and
cleaning/maintenance of buildings and grounds.
Ensures that proper level of animal food, vaccines, chemicals,
and so forth are inventories and maintained.
May assist people in reclaiming or adopting animals held at a
pound or animal shelter.
May maintain records of reclamations or adoptions.
May provide information to inquiries from the public concerning
adoption of animals and related matters.
Feeds, waters, cleans, grooms, and exercises animals.
Cleans and sterilizes animal food bowls and water pans.
Cleans and disinfects animal living quarters and may clean other
areas including office and outside areas.
Collects stool samples and takes them to veterinarian for
analysis for parasites.
Observes animals= general health, diet, weight, appetite, and so
forth for negative symptoms.
Maintains security within the area that animals are housed.
Transports animals to veterinarian for checkups, shots,
deworming, or other examination/treatment.
May assist with training of animals.
May perform routine clerical work in keeping records of animals
being housed.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in the care and feeding of
animals.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the care and feeding of animals.
Knowledge of methods of cleaning and disinfecting cages, pens,
and related equipment.
Knowledge of identifying symptoms of health disorders in animals.
Ability to work harmoniously with citizens and others.
Ability to care for animals sympathetically.
Ability to recognize symptoms of animal sickness or disease.
Ability to supervise subordinate employees.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
