DRAFTING TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Under direction, performs the routine drafting work involved in the
preparation of drawings, maps, charts, graphs, sketches, and plans;
does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Prepares clear, accurate, and complete working plans and detailed
drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes according to
specified dimension.
Makes final sketches of proposed drawings, checking dimensions of
parts, and makes any adjustments or changes necessary or desired.
Inks in all lines and letters on pencil drawings as required;
exercises manual skill in manipulation of drafting tools.
Draws charts for representation of statistical data; draws finished
designs from sketches; makes and/or checks noncomplex mathematic
calculations.
Maintains established relevant records and files where selection and
classification of data does not require difficult decisions and where
procedures are routine.
Pantographs paper tracings of aerial photographs and maps.
Under supervision does routine drafting work and prepares simple
tracings and drawings.
Under supervision of a Head Drafting Technician, draws and letters
(freehand or by using a lettering guide) information on construction
plans, details, public hearing maps, utility agreement plans, R.O.W.
acquisition plans, floor plans, building relocation plans, and other
types of plans needed to complete a final set of contract drawings.
Prepares work drawings for field parties; letters, maps, and plans.
Make simple mathematic computations.
Computes estimates of quantities for simple bridge items of work or
building construction.
Signs tracings to certify accuracy of work performed.
Reviews simple shop plans.
Prepares charts, diagrams, and graphs as required.
Pantographs paper tracings of aerial photographs and maps.
Assists in maintaining essential records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of technical high school or vocational
courses in mechanical drawing, trigonometry, and geometry.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's
license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of drafting procedures, methods, and tools, and their
application.
Knowledge of the making of arithmetic calculations and triangulation
computations.
Knowledge of engineering terminology.
Knowledge of the problems and techniques involved in plotting and
tracing maps and diagrams and in indicating thereon varied types of
data.
Knowledge of the accurate presentation of data in visual form,
including charts, maps, graphs, sketches, drawings, and plans.
Ability to review, revise, and correct working drawings, charts,
graphs, and maps.
Ability to use Leroy lettering templates, cultural templates, Railroad
Ruling pens, and other drafting tools and equipment.
Ability to analyze and understand the problems involved in the
preliminary and final stages of drafting.
Ability to organize assigned drafting and related work, analyze
drafting problems, and develop effective work methods.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions.
Ability to prepare accurate, neat, and complete maps, drawings,
charts, graphs, diagrams, and plans.
Ability to plot alignments or construction plans from designers' notes
and to show needed information accurately in visual forms.
Ability to letter neatly and quickly both freehand and by use of
lettering guides, using good judgment in the proportioning of titles
and the selection of features to be made prominent.
Ability to detail procedures for bridges and structures.
Ability to properly use and care for drafting equipment, tools,
materials, and supplies.
Ability to assist in maintaining essential reports and records.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
