Job Specification

PRINTING MACHINE OPERATOR TRAINEE

DEFINITION:

Under the close supervision of a Printing Machine Operator 4 or other 
supervisory official in a State department, agency, institution, or in a 
local jurisdiction, as a trainee and productive worker, receives on-the-
job training in the setup, operation, and cleaning of printing machines 
such as offset presses, cutting machines, and digital printers (copiers); 
does other related duties as required. 

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only.  
A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in 
this job specification.  Conversely, all duties performed on the job may 
not be listed. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Under close supervision, as a trainee and productive worker:

Learns to set up, operate, and adjust offset presses, plate makers, cutting 
machines, folding machines, stapling machines, collators, padding units, 
paper drills, electric punching machines, and/or binding machines.

Learns to correct printing press problems such as tinting, scudding, 
streaks, slow drying, and/or double images.

Learns to mix chemicals and/or other solutions.

Learns to program digital printer (copiers), cutters, folders, number 
machines, and other finishing equipment that utilize intelligent interfaces.

Learns to scan hard copy originals, converting them to usable digital 
formats.

Learns to assemble (bind) books, booklets, and/or other printed materials.

Learns to produce metal and polyester plates.

Learns to remove residue from digital printers (copiers), offset presses, 
plate makers, cutting machines, collators, folding machines, and/or 
stapling machines.

Learns to adjust digital printers (copiers) for density and contrast.

Learns to correct mechanical binding products such as folding, stapling, 
drilling, cutting, stitching, and/or padding.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, 
or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

Possession of a high school diploma or a GED.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the procedures for setting up, operating, and adjusting 
offset presses, plate makers, cutting machines, folding machines, 
stapling machines, digital printers (copiers), collators, padding units, 
paper drills, electric punching machines, and binding machines, after 
a period of training.  

Knowledge of the chemicals and solutions used in printing, after a 
period of training.

Knowledge of the procedures for producing metal and polyester plates, 
after a period of training.

Knowledge of the techniques for binding books, booklets, and other 
printed materials, after a period of training.

Knowledge of established safety procedures and guidelines, after 
a period of training.

Ability to perceive color differences.

Ability to follow oral and written orders, directions, and plans.

Ability to make precise measurements.

Ability to communicate orally.

Ability to read with comprehension.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, 
decimals, percentages, and fractions.

Ability to convey information in an organized written format.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or 
related units. 

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in 
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American 
sign language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms 
of communication.

ADVANCEMENT:

Upon successful completion of the six (6) month training period, 
appointees will be eligible for advancement to Printing Machine 
Operator 1, in accordance with New Jersey Civil Service 
Commission procedures.

The inability of an employee in the trainee title to attain a level 
of performance warranting advancement to Printing Machine 
Operator 1 shall be considered as cause for separation.
