Job Specification

  BARBER

  DEFINITION:

  Under direction of a supervisory official, shaves and cuts the hair of 
  patients, residents, and/or inmates, both in the shop and in the wards 
  or cottages.  Keeps the barber shop area and instruments in a clean, 
  sanitary, and orderly condition; does barber related work as required.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK

  Cuts and trims the hair of males and females.

  Shaves males.

  Escorts individuals to the barber shop, and returns individuals to
  the wards and cottages after barber services have been provided 
  to them.

  May assist in training residents in personal grooming self-help
  skill.

  Examines scalp for any disease or scalp disorder.

  Schedules work load of barber services.

  Cuts and trims the hair of nonambulatory individuals and shaves
  such individuals, as needed.

  Follows proper procedures to promote public health and prevent
  disease.

  Cleans the chairs, clippers, combs, scissors, razors, and other
  instruments and the sterile cabinets and sterilizes all instruments 
  and tools of the trade in accordance with the regulations issued 
  by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.

  Keeps own person neat and clean at all times.

  Sharpens razors, scissors, and clippers, and lubricates those
  instruments with moveable parts.

  Performs the presurgical preparation when required in preparing
  patients for operations.

  May be required to assist with other ward or cottage work on
  occasion when not performing barber services.

  Obtains, stores, safeguards, records supplies and equipment, 
  and uses them properly.

  Keep records and makes reports.

  Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic 
  and/or manual recording and computerized information system 
  used by the agency, office, or related units.

  REQUIREMENTS:

  LICENSE:

   Possession of a valid license as a Cosmetologist-Hairstylist, 
   issued by the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.

  Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
  valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
  employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties 
  of the position.

  KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  Knowledge of the problems involved in the cutting the hair of
  and shaving varied types of persons, both male and female.

  Knowledge of the methods used in keeping the shop and
  instruments in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.

  Knowledge of the proper use and maintenance of barbering 
  tools and equipment.

  Ability to carry out directions and learn from explanations.

  Ability to analyze institution barbering problems, organize
  work, and develop work methods.

  Ability to cut hair and shave ambulatory and bed patients in  
  a mental or other institution.

  Ability to perform presurgical preparations on those patients
  scheduled for surgical operations.

  Ability to clean the chairs, clippers, combs, scissors, razors, and 
  cabinets, and sterilize the tools and equipment in accordance with 
  the regulations of the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology
  and Hairstyling.

  Ability to work harmoniously with others.

  Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and use equipment and
  materials.

  Ability to keep records and makes reports.

  Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English 
  sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
