HIGHWAY MARKER
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of a Crew Supervisor, Highway Marking,
Assistant Crew Supervisor, Highway Marking or other supervisory
official in the Department of Transportation, performs the varied tasks
required to paint crosswalk lines; erect and maintain traffic signs,
aerial platform trucks and other equipment; interprets plans and
sketches; operates motors, pumps, compressors, and other component
equipment in a crosswalk crew or on a line-stripping vehicle; does
related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Under direction, performs varied tasks required to paint crosswalk
lines or erect traffic signs and/or, as an assistant to a Heavy
Equipment Operator (Highway Marking), in a line painting crew, operates
component equipment on a line-stripping vehicle.
When so required, interprets plans and sketches for painting new
and repainting existing traffic and parking control and sign location
and erection lines.
Operates, regulates and adjusts air compressors, gasoline motors,
power spray guns, bead dispensers, power take-off pumps, and mobile
line painters, and other equipment as required on a crosswalk crew or
as an assistant to a Heavy Equipment Operator (Highway Marking) on a
line-stripping vehicle.
Operates pick-up, ladder and aerial platform trucks, air
compressors, pneumatic and electric hammering and drilling equipment,
banking equipment and miscellaneous hand tools required for erecting
and maintaining signs.
Utilizes safety equipment and follows safety procedures while
controlling traffic flow to insure protection of department personnel,
equipment and the general public during maintenance operations.
Works with sign erection crews and others assigned to crosswalk
and sign erection.
Maintains factual records.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in work involving highway marking
and/or sign erection.
LICENSE:
Appointee must possess a valid Commercial Drivers License
(CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle
being operated.
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess
the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and
type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of and familiarity with the proper use and
maintenance of line painting and sign erection equipment.
Knowledge of the proper use of department safety equipment and
procedures necessary for the protection of personnel, equipment, and
the general public.
Ability to interpret plans and sketches for painting new and
repainting existing lines for traffic and parking control and for sign
location and erection.
Ability to operate and make minor adjustments to equipment,
including air compressors, gasoline motors, spray guns, bead
dispensers, power take off pumps, mobile line painters, pick-up ladders
and aerial platform and general purpose trucks, pneumatic and electric
hammering and drilling equipment and banding equipment.
Ability to use hand tools of various types.
Ability to observe department safety regulations and
procedures.
Ability to prepare factual reports.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
