MAINTENANCE WORKER 2, TRANSPORTATION
DEFINITION
Under supervision in the Department of Transportation, performs
unskilled and semi-skilled work involved in state highway construction
and maintenance operations and which may involve a variety of duties
requiring physical exertion, manipulative ability, the routine use of
hand, machine, and power tools; the operation of power mowers, and
other less complex power equipment; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Uses bituminous materials and various aggregates for the repair
and maintenance of varied types of highway payments and shoulders.
Repairs, cleans, and maintains state highway drainage systems and
structures of all types.
Mows grass, cuts weeds, cleans brush, and maintains slopes and
roadslides.
Constructs, paints, and maintains guard rails.
Operates smallpower mowers and other less complex power equipment
or power tools.
Cleans and paints various departmental equipment.
Performs snow removal and ice control work at any time of day or
night as required.
Operates trucks or other equipment for limited periods of time.
As required, acts as a service attendant be dispersing fuel, oil,
and other related supplies.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months of experience in unskilled and/or semi-skilled
laboring work.
LICENSE:
Appointees must obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and
applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being
operated.
NOTE:The inability of an employee in this title to obtain a CDL
license and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle
being operated within six (6) months of appointment, shall be
considered as cause for separation.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the proper use and care of hand, machine, and
power tools.
Knowledge of standard practices in laboring operations.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and
written instructions.
Ability to perform wide variety of manual tasks usually as a
member of a group.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of
the time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
Ability to follow established procedures.
Ability to maintain simple records.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
