Job Specification

  HELPER

  DEFINITION:

       Under supervision of a Crew Supervisor or other supervisory
  official in a state department, institution, or agency, either working
  alone or as one of a group, does varied unskilled and/or semi-skilled
  work; does related work as required.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

       Assists or works alone in unskilled manual work involving
  construction, maintenance, repair, and painting of buildings and
  grounds.

       Operates equipment and tools necessary to perform duties.

       Assists in loading and unloading cars and trucks.

       Acts as messenger.

       May assist with simple stock and clerical work.

       Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
  and/or manual recording and computerized information systems 
  used by the agency, office, or related units.

  REQUIREMENTS:

       EXPERIENCE:

           Six (6) months of experience in any variety of unskilled
  labor.

       LICENSE:

           Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid
  in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
  mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

           Knowledge of the procedures, equipment, and tools used in
  doing unskilled manual work involved in the construction, maintenance,
  and repair of buildings and grounds, in the handling of goods and
  materials, and in simple office work.

           Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and
  written directions.

           Ability to learn from explanations and from demonstrations.

           Ability to learn to do simple construction, maintenance, and
  repair work on buildings and grounds.

           Ability to load and unload trucks and cars and to assist in a
  stockroom by doing varied manual tasks.

           Ability to do unskilled office work, to carry messages, and to
  deliver packages.

           Ability to keep simple records.

           Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
  manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
  office, or related units.

           Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
  English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American
  Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
  forms of communication.
