Job Specification

BODY AND FENDER MECHANIC

    (ALL JURISDICTIONS)

 DEFINITION:

 Under supervision performs tasks involved in maintaining and 
 repairing the bodies and fenders of trucks, automobiles, and 
 other motorized equipment; does other related duties.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not 
 perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, 
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK
 
 Inspects vehicles to determine nature and extent of repairs.

 Dismantles damaged parts.

 Repairs minor surface dents using a hammer and block.

 Rolls and sketches metal to correct major damages.

 Straightens bodies and fenders.

 Welds and fills rips and tears in bodies and fenders.

 Cleans and primes repaired parts.

 Reassembles repaired parts.

 Mixes, applies, and finishes paint, enamels, and lacquers.

 Applies transfer seals and lettering with transfer cement.

 Maintains records.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information system used by the 
 agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS

 TRAINING

 Successful completion of a formal training course in automotive
 body repair at an accredited community college or vocational school.

 EXPERIENCE: 

 Two (2) years of experience in motor vehicle body and fender
 repair work.

 NOTE:  Applicants who do not possess the required year 
 of formal training may substitute one (1) additional year of experience 
 as outlined above.

 LICENSES AND CERTFICATIONS

 Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
 Appointees may be required to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's
 License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type 
 of vehicle being operated.

 The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the
 required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class 
 and type of vehicle operated, rests with the Appointing Authority.

 In accordance with Federal regulation 82:40, appointees
 responsible for the repair or servicing of motor vehicle air
 conditioners are required to possess and maintain a valid 
 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification, 
 commensurate with the type of equipment serviced, issued 
 by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

 In accordance with the New Jersey Occupational Safety and Health
 Administration regulation 29 CFR 1910.178(1) (1), appointees
 responsible for the operation of industrial trucks (powered forklifts)
 will be required to obtain and maintain a current certification as 
 a Powered Industrial Truck Operator issued by the New Jersey
 Occupational Safety and Health Administration.  Appointees 
 may be required to successfully complete retraining.

 Affected appointees are required to maintain valid certifications
 and successfully complete the re-certification processes within 
 the timeframes mandated by statute.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of equipment, tools, materials, and methods used 
 to repair motor vehicle bodies and fenders.

 Knowledge of the methods used to dismantle and assemble 
 automotive bodies.

 Knowledge of welding techniques needed to repair auto fenders 
 and bodies.

 Knowledge of methods used to mix and apply paint.

 Ability to mix and apply automobile paint.

 Ability to inspect damaged vehicles and determine nature of repairs.

 Ability to dismantle, repair, and reassemble bodies and fenders.

 Ability to maintain equipment, tools, and supplies in an orderly, 
 and safe condition.

 Ability to maintain records of work done, materials used, and 
 time spent.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
 and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in 
 English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.  American 
 Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
 forms of communication.
