Job Specification

RESOURCE INTERPRETIVE SPECIALIST 1, HISTORIC RESOURCES
 
DEFINITION:
 
Under the close supervision of a Resource Interpretive Specialist 4 
or other supervisory official in the Natural and Historic Resources 
Program, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), or, in a 
Local Government jurisdiction, assists in coordinating research and 
publicizing information related to historic resource interpretation and 
scheduled events; assists in monitoring the use of a historic resource 
facility; may research, interpret, and present information related to 
New Jersey history; does other related duties as required.

NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

COMMON TO ALL:

Conducts research from both primary and secondary sources, 
interprets appropriate material, incorporates significant elements, 
and prepares special projects of historic resource events, programs, 
and exhibits.

Assists in coordinating arrangements for historic resource public 
events/publications, including the development of publications 
involving artwork and informational graphics.

Recommends creative approaches in the development of various 
books, pamphlets, and reading material; reviews various publications 
and brochures for content and style.

Provides recommendations regarding office displays, and ordering 
and distribution of appropriate historic resource brochures and 
publications.

Researches and gathers historic resource awareness information 
to educate the public and provide a service concerning recreational 
activities.

Gathers information for the bidding process from vendors for historic 
resource brochures.

Maintains a reference system for the graphic mechanics of historic 
resource public information supplies.

Assists in updating publications, guides, and other booklets and 
brochures containing historic resource information about State 
facilities.

Assists in making arrangements for conferences, seminars, and 
workshops, providing background and written information when 
appropriate.

Provides technical assistance in response to routine or basic inquiries.

Performs the required care and maintenance of the historic resource 
facility.

Prepares reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Conducts lectures, classes, educational programs, and/or guided 
tours for groups of different ages and interest levels at the historic 
resource facility; interprets history and/or historic values.

Assists in developing special programs, events, and exhibits to 
increase public knowledge and appreciation of the historic resource 
facility's history and significance.

Assists in monitoring the use of the historic facility; identifies and 
corrects deficient conditions and notifies the proper authorities.

Keeps current with new developments in museum techniques and 
technology.

Maintains the collection of the historic house museum or historic 
village, including cleaning and cataloging, and basic conservation 
of historic objects using current museum methods; performs 
curatorial care and museum maintenance.

Maintains proper storage areas for the museum collection(s); 
monitors exhibits and storage areas for potential environmental 
problems.

Locates, develops, maintains, and provides information regarding 
interpretive facilities on newly acquired and existing areas.

Assists in investigating complaints concerning alleged violations 
of the historic resource interpretive facility rules.

Establishes and maintains records and files.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
office, or related units.

IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE:
 
Participates in the coordination of, and recommends creative 
approaches in, the development of educational guides related 
to New Jersey history.

Makes arrangements for historic or preservation based seminars 
and workshops.

Prepares reports based on original historic research.

Works to increase public knowledge and appreciation of 
New Jersey history.

REQUIREMENTS:

IN STATE GOVERNMENT SERVICE

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a 
Bachelor's degree in History, American History, Art History, 
Architectural History, American Studies, American Literature, 
or Museum Studies.

EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of experience in the research and preparation of 
historic resource information, the implementation of historic 
resource programs, or the planning, preparation, and care of 
exhibits of objects of artistic or historic value.

IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE:

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's 
degree in History, American History, American Studies, or Museum 
Studies.

EXPERIENCE:
 
One (1) year of experience in the research and preparation of historic 
resource information, the implementation of historic resource programs,
or the planning, preparation, and care of exhibits of objects of historic 
value or as a museum curator.
 
IN STATE OR LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE

NOTE:  A Master's degree in History, American History, 
Architectural History, American Studies, American Literature, 
Museum Studies, or closely related field may be substituted for 
the one (1) year of experience.

NOTE:  Appointees may be required to be bonded by an 
appropriate agency dealing with artifacts and collections.

LICENSE:
 
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

COMMON TO ALL:
 
Knowledge of research methods and techniques.

Knowledge of the methods used to write, edit, and develop articles 
for publications.

Knowledge of the principles of historic resource management.

Knowledge of the methods used to prepare museum exhibits and 
displays.

Knowledge of graphic arts required in the development and 
maintenance of historic publications.

Knowledge of the methods used to handle and protect museum 
objects.

Ability to recommend creative ideas for articles/features regarding 
historic resource publications.

Ability to gather and analyze information.

Ability to prepare, review, and edit written material.

Ability to prepare technical and other informative reports containing 
findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Ability to draft correspondence.

Ability to conduct guided tours, explain specific points of interest in 
each historic resource facility, and interpret the historic values.

Ability to prepare, select, and arrange suitable historic resource 
photographic and illustrative articles.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships 
with staff and those interested in the work of the program.

Ability to plan State historic resource events.

Ability to identify, report, and assist in the basic preventive 
maintenance of hazardous and detrimental conditions of the 
historic resource facility.
 
Ability to catalog museum objects in an appropriate manner, 
using current museum methods. 

Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply basic rules and regulations.

Ability to investigate complaints concerning alleged violations of 
the historic resource interpretive facility.

Ability to establish and maintain records and files.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign 
Language or Braille may also be considered acceptable forms of 
communication.

programs.

Ability to prepare and develop historic educational programs for 
students of all grades.
