ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISOR OF NURSES
DEFINITION
Under direction, has charge of and is responsible for the
administrative activities of the nursing department; does other
related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Plans, organizes, and coordinates the implementation of established
policies within the units.
Develops, assigns, and evaluates proper and effective work methods.
Analyzes and evaluates nursing care and makes recommendations for
improvement or development.
Assists in the planning for provision of physical facilities.
Participates in developing a program of orientation and in- service
training for personnel.
Assists, confers and plans with other divisions in the department to
coordinate, evaluate, and recommend for implementation of complete
program.
Confers with members of medical and psychiatric staff for
understanding of patient-care problems.
Monitors the handling, dispensing, use of and recording of narcotics,
medications, equipment, and supplies within the units.
Takes the lead in the preparation of the unit's budget by accepting
reports from supervisors of nurses assistant supervisors, head nurses,
assistant head nurses, and registered professional nurses.
Prepares and supervises the preparation of requisitions for
medication, equipment and supplies.
Evaluates and controls budget expenditures in the units.
Resolves complex nursing problems.
Maintains a professional interest in employee and public relations.
Manages the supervision of students and of volunteer workers.
Establishes priorities for patient care.
Investigates trends and developments in nursing practice and
techniques. Supervises the keeping of medical and all other records
with the units.
Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of reports and surveys.
Participates actively in civic, educational, and professional
organizations.
Evaluates employee performance and conduct enabling the effective
recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, disciplining, and
development of employees.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience as a registered professional nurse,
one (1) year of which shall have included the supervision of staff and
related administrative activities in a nursing department.
LICENSE:
Current and valid registration as a professional nurse in the State
of New Jersey.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principles and methods of professional nursing and
hospital organization.
Knowledge of sterilization, immunization, and diagnoses.
Knowledge of the preparation and maintenance of accurate medical and
other records.
Knowledge of the narcotics medications and treatments.
Ability to interpret and apply unit policies.
Ability to analyze, comprehend, and interpret professional and
administrative nursing problems.
Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates.
Ability to develop suitable work schedules for assigned employees.
Ability to handle, dispense, direct the use of and keep record of
narcotics, medications, and other supplies.
Ability to apply principles, procedures and practices of nursing to
specific cases. Ability to observe and report symptoms and condition
of patients.
Ability to administer medications.
Ability to prepare and to supervise the preparation of requisitions
for needed medication, equipment and supplies.
Ability to direct the keeping of clear, sound, accurate and
informative reports containing findings and conclusions.
Ability to direct the maintenance of suitable records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
