Job Specification

ASSISTANT COORDINATOR OF SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION SERVICES  

DEFINITION:

Under direction, assists in planning, organizing, directing and coordinating school transportation programs, services, operations and staff; performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Assists in directing and coordinating the operation, maintenance, scheduling, and reporting of a fleet of school buses.

Assists in planning, organizing, and conducting driver training courses, periodic refresher courses in safety, and workshops for school bus drivers.

Assists in supervising expenditures in budget categories affecting bus transportation such as funds for supplies, fuel, repairs, replacements, and additions in accord with established regulations.

Plans and supervises school bus routes.

Adjusts schedules and student bus assignments when necessary.

Maintains communications between all personnel involved in student transportation.

Instructs and gives assignments to staff involved in school transportation.

Recruits, selects, and recommends drivers and other transportation personnel.

Compiles and prepares detailed, complex correspondence, transportation reports, and records.

Investigates accidents involving school buses and recommends disciplinary action when appropriate.

Assists in the oversight of the bus license registration process.

Maintains a central record of the use of all vehicular units and running costs.

Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.

Visually inspects buses for needed repairs and ensures safety provisions and sanitary conditions meet standards.

Prepares and maintains essential records and files.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Six (6) years of professional experience involving the organization, planning, direction and scheduling of mass passenger transportation services, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional supervisory experience.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees may be required to possess School Transportation Supervisor Certificate issued by the Rutgers University Center for Government Services.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of State and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding public bus operation.

Knowledge of bus inspection methods.

Knowledge of the procedures used in the operation and maintenance of school buses.

Knowledge of the types of violations commonly found in school bus operations.

Knowledge of safety precautions to be followed when working with children both with and without disabilities.

Knowledge of the problems involved in the operation, maintenance, repair, and supply of a fleet of school buses.

Knowledge of current prices for bus parts, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, and bus replacements.

Knowledge of problems involved in dispatching several vehicles from a central pool.

Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.

Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective working procedures.

Ability to give assignments and instructions to subordinates and supervise the performance of their work.

Ability to direct the operation of a fleet of school buses.

Ability to work collaboratively with superiors, associates, employees, and other persons interested in or concerned with the work of the pupil transportation department.

Ability to make impartial investigations of accidents involving school buses and to recommend disciplinary action against the employee involved.

Ability to develop detailed, complex studies and surveys containing findings, conclusions, and formal recommendations concerning school bus operation and maintenance.

Ability to prepare and maintain essential records, files, and correspondence.

Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
