Job Specification

ASSISTANT RECREATION SUPERVISOR  

DEFINITION:

Under direction, assists in the planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a recreation program to meet community needs; assists in training and supervision of leaders for recreation activities; assists in formulating and supervising recreation programs at playgrounds and recreation centers and in preparation and promotion of exhibits, shows, special events, and displays; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of creative arts and crafts, the training and supervision of recreation leadership for activities in this field, the formulation and supervision of a diversified crafts program for playgrounds and recreation centers, and the preparation and promotion of exhibits, shows, and displays involving arts and crafts.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of all forms of the dance, dance drama productions, dance symposiums, clinics, and workshops, musical reviews, festivals, demonstrations, and pageants, social dancing, and folk and square dancing development and dance portions of related activity programs.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program involving such activities as puppetry, storytelling, pantomime, creative drama, informal dramatics, play production, little theater and children's theater promotion and development, drama workshops, pageants, festivals, talent shows, play tournaments, and other special events based on dramatic activity, integrating dramatics, storytelling, and puppetry into year round basic community recreation programs through training, supervision, and assistance of other staff members and volunteers, and in supervising the wardrobe, drama library, and scenery and property room.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide recreation program offering instruction in golfing techniques and/or the opportunity to participate in games and contests for amateur golfers.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program designed to provide safe recreation activities for handicapped individuals.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide recreation program offering instruction in hockey techniques and/or the opportunity to participate in games and contests for amateur hockey players.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of recreation activities for men and boys.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of instrumental and vocal music for children and adults including orchestras, bands, choruses, and other choral and instrumental groups, and may have charge of music festivals and contests, music week, musical holiday celebrations, and musical portions of regular and special programs in addition to training, supervision, and assistance of recreation leaders in using music in the recreation program.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of recreation activities related to nature and camping including nature clubs, conservation projects, gardening, picnics and outings, hunting and fishing, editing nature bulletins, and day and overnight camping.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of instruction in photography techniques; May explain and demonstrate methods and techniques of photography (and related techniques) to children and adults; may mix chemicals, process film and photographic paper, and make contact and enlarged prints; plans and supervises the work of students in a shop.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of playground recreation activities and indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of recreation activities for older adults.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of athletic recreation activities for people of all ages.

May assist in planning, promotion, development, and supervision of a community-wide program of recreation activities for women and girls.

May assist in planning, initiation, organizing, and supervision of an program of recreation activities for the entire community in the speciality or pertaining to a specified group of facilities such as playgrounds or recreation centers.

May assist in supervising, training, evaluating, and advising recreation personnel.

Recommends, demonstrates, and applies techniques, procedures, materials, equipment, and supplies for use in special activities.

May assist in interpretation of the recreation program to the general public through use of press releases and other related techniques involving news media as well as through participation in public and organization meetings.

Coordinates specific recreation programs with those in related areas and with the overall recreation service.

Prepares reports.

Supervises the establishment of records and files.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Five (5) years of professional experience in recreation work involving the planning, promoting, and development of a general professional recreation program.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree in Recreation or in Park and Recreation Management from an accredited college or university.

OR

Possession of a Master's degree in Recreation or in Park and Recreation Management from an accredited college or university.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Possession of a valid certificate as a Recreation Supervisor issued by the New Jersey Board of Recreation Examiners may be required.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of methods and problems involved in planning, promoting, developing, and supervising a general recreation program or a recreation program in the specialty field indicated.

Ability to organize, develop, and coordinate a recreation program.

Ability to give assignments and instruction to subordinates and to supervise their work.

Ability to enlist the interest of concerned people and encourage their participation in the organized program.

Ability to establish and maintain helpful, cooperative relationships with associates and the public.

Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports.

Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of records and files.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
