Job Specification

ASSISTANT VIOLATIONS CLERK
 
DEFINITION

Under direction, assists the violations clerk or other supervisory official 
in supervising and/or performing the more difficult and responsible work
involved in collecting fees for traffic violations in municipal courts; does 
related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Assists the Violations Clerk or other supervisory official in supervising and/or 
performing the more difficult and responsible work involved in collecting fees 
for traffic violations in relation to the acceptances of appearance, waivers of
trial, pleas of guilty, and payment of fines, costs, and traffic violations.

Records the names of traffic violators, their addresses, amounts of fines, and 
dates of payments in docket books.

May attend court sessions.

Reviews, checks, and certifies reports, applications, and other documents.

Handles special requests for information in accord with prescribed rules and 
regulations.

Receives, reviews, and handles complaints.

Answers inquiries.

Handles correspondence.

Prepares reports and statements.

Maintains essential records and files.

In the absence of the Violations Clerk, assumes duties and has official 
authority to act on behalf of the position.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and computerized information systems used by the 
agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of experience in recordkeeping or the maintenance of records.

LICENSE:
 
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey 
only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary 
to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of office methods, practices, and equipment used to check, 
sort, index, store and file records.

Ability to perform tasks involved in the maintenance of records.

Ability to comprehend established office routines, rules, and regulations 
of a limited complexity.

Ability to maintain essential records and files.

Ability to make mathematical calculations.  

Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related 
units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language 
or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
