CHIEF EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION:
Under direction, supervises emergency medical personnel
who are responsible for providing emergency medical treatment
to persons who are sick or injured at the scene of accidents,
disasters, etc., prior to their arrival to a hospital; does related
work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises emergency medical personnel who answer calls
for emergency medical treatment.
Schedules work shifts of emergency medical personnel.
Maintains a log of ambulance calls and records of runs made.
Assists or prepares the annual budget.
Prepares reports on the operation of the unit.
Interviews and recommends applicants for emergency
medical positions.
Assists in the mediation of disputes.
Prepares and arranges for training and certification of all
technicians by the State Health Department.
Attends conferences on emergency medical services
and instructs emergency medical personnel on these services.
Supervises the billing and collection of money for services
rendered when applicable.
Inspects ambulances and all medical equipment to insure
that equipment is operative and in good condition.
Works in conjunction with the Police and Fire Departments,
Morgue Keeper, Medical Examiner and hospitals to maintain
an orderly transfer of patients from one hospital to another
from disaster sites etc.
Maintains necessary records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience as an emergency medical
technician or in the practice of emergency medical care,
one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory
capacity.
CERTIFICATION
Applicants are required to possess a current and valid
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification issued
by the New Jersey Department of Health.
NOTE: Applicants who possess the higher level
certification as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic, or Mobile
Intensive Care Registered Nurse Certification, issued by the
New Jersey Department of Health, are considered to have met
the above certification requirement.
NOTE: Jurisdictions may require appointees to possess a valid
Emergency Medical Technician Basic Instructor certificate or a
Paramedic certification card issued by the New Jersey Department
of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS). The
responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required
certification rests with the Appointing Authority.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principals for emergency medical and first
aid treatment.
Knowledge of the techniques used to administer pulmonary and
cardiac resuscitation.
Knowledge of the techniques used to administer oxygen.
Knowledge of the appropriate emergency treatment depending
on the patient's condition.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
methods.
Ability to provide assignments and instructions and develop
work schedules for assigned employees and to supervise the
performance of their work.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with coworkers and others involved in the work of the unit.
Ability to prioritize emergency medical treatment needs.
Ability to remain calm in a crisis situation.
Ability to determine the nature and extent of injury and provide
emergency medical treatment.
Ability to administer first aid, CPR and other emergency
medical care.
Ability to establish necessary records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
