Job Specification

COMPUTER OPERATOR TRAINEE

 DEFINITION:
 
 Under close supervision, receives on the job training in monitoring,
 control, and operation of an electronic computer; performs work as
 assigned as both trainee and productive worker which will provide
 practical experience in computer operations; does other related duties
 as required.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform
 all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties
 performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 As trainee and productive worker, studies principles/techniques of
 computer operation and work processes and methods of the agency.

 Observes and participates in monitoring of an electronic computer.

 Helps manipulate control switches on control panels, storage devices,
 and peripheral equipment in accord with detailed programmer
 instructions or operating manuals.

 May prepare equipment for production/operation by placing cards in
 hoppers, mounting tape reels and discs, loading programs, adjusting
 print control settings on printers, and so forth.

 Learns to identify causes of computer malfunctioning and confers with
 a supervisor for necessary corrective action.

 Learns to determine correct procedure when program stoppage occurs and
 attempts to ensure completion of program operation according to
 directions or operating manual.

 May maintain operating records such as machine performance, production
 reports, data processing supplies and inventories, and disc/tape
 library records.

 Learns to operate related auxiliary equipment directly associated with
 the computer.

 Aids in advising programmers of nature of operating malfunctions and
 corrective action taken.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
 office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      LICENSE:

      Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
 in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Ability to analyze data.

 Ability to reason logically and draw sound conclusions in recommending
 courses of action. Ability to learn to utilize various types of
 electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
 agency, office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.

 Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as
 they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable
 accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation
 cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship,
 such persons may not be eligible.

 ADVANCEMENT:
 
 NOTE: The designated length of the training period for this class shall not 
 be longer than 12 months duration in accord with NJAC 4A:3-3.7(d).

 Appointees who successfully complete the 12-month training period will
 be eligible for promotion to the title among the following for which
 they have been trained: Computer Operator

 The inability of an employee in this trainee title to attain a level
 of performance warranting advancement to a title listed above shall be
 considered as cause for separation.
