 CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
  
  DEFINITION:

  Under direction of a Pathologist, a Physician Director of
  Pathology, or a New Jersey State Licensed Laboratory Director, 
  (license granted by the Board of Medical Examiners), in a Clinical 
  Laboratory under the jurisdiction of the State of New Jersey or any 
  other facility meeting this requirement and governed by Public Law l975, 
  Chapter 166 of July 23, l975, of the State of New Jersey, performs, 
  interprets, and assumes responsibility for the performance of all or 
  any aspect of the technical work; does related work as required.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  Follows policies of the Department of Human Services, policies set
  up by the employing Clinical Laboratory, and the specific policies of
  the Institution where employee is hired.

  Performs urinalysis including microscopical and special tests.

  Collects blood, including venipuncture and preparation of blood
  for analysis.

  Performs hematologic procedures.

  Performs blood banking procedures including record keeping,
  typing, agglutinations for accurate identifications, and preparation
  for administration.

  Discerns ova and parasistes in body fluids and excretia.

  Discerns bacterial morphology in body fluids, discharges, 
  and excretia.

  Performs all bacteriology steps to identify bacteria, fungus, 
  and parasites from the specimens submitted.

  Performs routine sterility tests on hospital water sources.

  Performs serology testing including tests for syphilis and
  antibody titers.

  Does test for Antistreptolysis O Titer.

  Performs periodic surveys for bacterial detection in different
  areas of the hospital.

  Performs sensitivity testing as requested.

  Measures blood ureas and sugars and conducts routine blood
  chemistries of all types.

  Conducts tests for Australia Antigen (HAA).

  Establishes and maintains essential records and files.

  Responsible for the operation, methodology, maintenance, 
  and quality control with adequate record keeping of determinations 
  of blood gases and electrolytes; also determinations of dilantin 
  and phenobarbital levels, and other drugs as instituted on a 
  periodic basis.

  Processes cytology specimens, vaginal, body fluids, and
  so forth, including record keeping, staining over slipping, 
  labelling,  etc.

  Performs histology procedures including labelling, processing,
  embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping and record 
  keeping, and filing of tissues and other material submitted for 
  histological examination, as well as autopsy material.

  May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
  and/or manual recording and information systems used by 
  the agency, office, or related units.

  REQUIREMENTS

  EDUCATION:

  Successful completion of a course of study from an accredited
  school for Clinical Laboratory Assistant, Medical Laboratory
  Technician, Laboratory Assistant, or Medical Technician.

  Must be certified as a Clinical Laboratory Technician,
  Laboratory Assistant, or Medical Technician by and 
  registered with a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

  LICENSE:

  Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license 
  valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather 
  than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential 
  duties of the position.

  KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  Knowledge of chemistry, hematology, bacteriology, and
  serology.

  Knowledge of manual and automated laboratory equipment.

  Knowledge of preparing and dispensing reagents.

  Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply laboratory
  techniques.

  Ability to perform clinical laboratory procedures assigned
  with accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility .

  Ability to maintain accurate records such as logging,
  reporting, and filing.

  Ability to maintain quality control documentation of all
  laboratory procedures.

  Ability to observe and maintain laboratory safety standards.

  Ability to perform phlebotomy procedures and techniques 
  on patients.

  Ability to interact with coworkers, patients, and hospital
  personnel in a courteous, professional, and amicable fashion.

  Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
  manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
  office, or related units.

  Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate 
  in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  
  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered 
  as acceptable forms of communication.
