Job Specification

EXTERMINATOR

DEFINITION: 

Under direction, performs skilled work in the prevention, control 
and elimination of insects, vermin and other pests from buildings 
and surrounding areas; performs other related work.

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative 
purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not 
perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely, 
all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Inspects premises to identify source of infestation and extent 
of damage to property.
 
Exterminates and removes insects, vermin and other pests 
using the most effective and appropriate treatment methods.

Selects and prepares insecticides, rodenticides, etc. to be used
in exterminations.

Sprays chemical solutions, powders and gases on or near 
buildings and interior and exterior surfaces to eliminate pests.

Takes required precautions to protect extermination workers 
and clients from poisonous effects of extermination compounds.

Handles, stores and records bait, traps, spades and other 
equipment for use in exterminations.

Clearly communicates with clients about the nature of infestations.

Documents and reports work hours and keeps record of equipment 
usage and exterminating activities performed.

Responds to pest complaints and inquiries; may routinely visit sites 
such as schools, apartments, buildings and parks for extermination 
maintenance.

Informs supervisor of issues and makes recommendations for 
solutions.

Maintains cleanliness in assigned areas after job completion.

May be required to drive a truck or other vehicle to or at work sites.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or  
manual  recording and information  systems  used  by the agency, 
office or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of work experience involving the prevention, control 
and extermination of insect and animal pests.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

Appointees must possess valid licensure and certification as 
a Commercial Pesticide Applicator issued by the New Jersey 
Department of Environmental Protection. The Appointing 
Authority is responsible for certification and license verification.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid 
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle,  rather than 
employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties 
of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of pest biology, habitats and breeding habits.

Knowledge of the safe application and management of 
chemical pesticides and laws restricting the use of certain 
pest control techniques in certain areas.

Knowledge of materials, equipment and procedures that are 
effective in controlling and exterminating insects and animal 
pests.

Ability to make accurate observations of conditions existing in 
and about buildings as they relate to the prevention, control, 
and elimination of insect and animal pests.

Ability to safely handle and administer a variety of chemical 
substances, bait and traps utilized in extermination processes.

Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Ability to write and prepare reports.

Ability to determine the preventative or remedial measures to 
be taken in pest infestations.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and information systems used by the agency, 
office,  or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in 
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.  American  
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
forms of communication.
