LIBRARY PAGE

DEFINITION:

Under supervision, charges and discharges library material to users; returns books, materials, and equipment to the correct location in the library; does other related duties as required.

SPECIAL SKILL: Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in Spanish and English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Charges and discharges library material to users.

Collects payments or fees.

Records receipt of fines on overdue books and materials.

Answers questions about applications of regulations or policies.

Updates and files records.

Returns books, materials, and equipment to the correct location in the library.

Organizes library materials for convenient access.

Informs individuals of procedures necessary for completion of forms and applications.

Operates standard office machines, such as copiers or calculators.

Informs individuals of library services.

Verifies eligibility of library users.

Searches the library for misplaced books, materials, and equipment.

Applies identification labels, stamp marks, pockets, or jackets to books, materials, or equipment.

Issues library materials for circulation.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of general vocabulary, spelling, and of standard English grammar.

Knowledge of filing procedures, including cross-file indexing.

Ability to learn to use the Dewy Decimal System and the Library of Congress System of cataloging.

Ability to compare written and printed material for accuracy.

Ability to read with comprehension.

Ability to compare numerical material for accuracy.

Ability to follow oral and written orders, directions, or plans.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, percentages, and fractions.

Ability to operate microfilm equipment and audiovisual instruments.

Ability to communicate orally.

Ability to convey information in a written format.

Ability to keep records.

Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
