Job Specification

MASON'S HELPER

 DEFINITION:

 Under direct supervision, assists a mason and develops a working
 knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices,
 occupational hazards, and safety preparations involved in masonry
 work; does other related work.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform
 all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties
 performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Assists in constructing block, stone, and brick walls, manholes,
 chimneys, columns, partitions, and other structures.

 Builds forms, erects scaffolding, carries and mixes mortar.

 Applies wood, wire, or composition lath.

 Builds or lays simple concrete structures such as sidewalks and
 floors.

 In maintenance, is involved with repairing cracks, and holes in
 plastered walls, taping and spackling drywall, pointing block stone
 and brick joints, breaking out and replacing damaged sections of
 sidewalk, drives and walls.

 Uses trowels, mortar pans, ready mixed concrete, spackling 
 compounds, floats, edgers and levels.

 Cleans tools and items of equipment, may work from simple 
 sketches or work orders.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the 
 agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      LICENSE:

      Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
 in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written
 explanations and demonstrations and to take needed safety 
 precautions in performing the work.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office, 
 or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in 
 English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.  American 
 Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
 forms of communication.
