 PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING AIDE

                         ALL JURISDICTIONS
 
 DEFINITION

 Under  an  engineer or other technical supervisor,  does  skilled
 technical  work  in connection with any phase of  engineering  or
 related activities in the field, office, or laboratory pertaining
 to   surveying,   planning,  design,  inspection,  investigation,
 maintenance,  and/or other fields; does other related  duties  as
 required.

 NOTE: The  examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes  only.  A particular position using this title  may  not
 perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely,
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Serves  as lead person of a party on investigations, inspections,
 and surveys involved in engineering projects and related work.

 Guides  subordinates in the assembly, analysis, and recording  of
 data.

 Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and
 evaluates   employee  performance  and  conduct,   enabling   the
 effective  recommendation of the hiring, firing,  promoting,  and
 disciplining of  subordinates.

 Develops  and  interprets proofs, charts, maps,  blueprints,  and
 other plans

 May assist in assembling proposals and other specifications.

 Maintains records and files.

 Participates  in  the  design of simple  features,  and  performs
 complex    mathematic   computations  involved   in   engineering
 construction and operations.

 Makes  studies,  prepares  reports,  performs  statistical  work,
 collects  samples,  makes  tests, and performs  related  work  as
 required.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or  manual  recording and information  systems  used  by  the
 agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      EXPERIENCE:

      Three  (3)  years of experience as an engineering technician
 performing  field  or  office tasks  involved  in  the  planning,
 surveying,  design, inspection, investigation, and/or maintenance
 of various types  of engineering projects or operations.

      NOTE: Education may be substituted for experience up to two
 (2) years on a year-for-year basis with thirty (30) semester hour
 credits  being equal to one (1) year of experience, and  with  at
 least  twenty-two (22) semester hour credits of the  thirty  (30)
 having been in engineering and technical subjects.

      LICENSE:

      Appointees  will  be required to possess a driver's  license
 valid  in  New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle,  rather
 than  employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
 of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge  of  procedures applied in engineering  activities  and
 related technical operations.

 Knowledge  of  materials, tools, and equipment  used  in  various
 engineering   construction,   maintenance,   and/or   operational
 projects.

 Knowledge  of methods used in making arithmetic calculations  and
 of fundamentals of algebra, plane geometry, and  trigonometry.

 Ability to operate surveying and testing instruments.

 Ability to perform drafting operations in preparation of  plans.

 Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and specifications.

 Ability  to  maintain  cooperative  working  relationships   with
 coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

 Ability to prepare complete, accurate reports.

 Ability to maintain records and files.

 Ability  to  utilize  various types of electronic  and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,  or
 related units.

 Ability  to  read, write, speak, understand, and  communicate  in
 English   sufficiently  to  perform  duties  of  this   position.
 American  Sign  Language or Braille may  also  be  considered  as
 acceptable forms of  communication.
