Job Specification

PROGRAM COORDINATOR MENTAL HEALTH  

DEFINITION:

Under direction, provides administrative assistance to the Medical Director or other executive or administrative officer in all phases of the administration of a community mental health program; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Provides administrative guidance to supervisors and employees including interpretation of rules and regulations pertaining to personnel, fiscal, and other administrative requirements.

Coordinates administrative procedures with professional staff to ensure accuracy of reports and statistics, and supervises the preparation of required reports.

Plans for administrative changes in expanding mental health programs and coordinates with other agencies operating in conjunction with community mental health centers.

Acts as agent for the program administrator dealing with government and nongovernment agencies on administrative matters.

Participates in administrative policy making for the center.

Develops and works with the Consumer Advisory Board.

Represents the center in major community functions.

Participates in interagency collaborative efforts to provide appropriate patient care for residents.

Develops procedures for patient flow in all elements of service.

Discusses staff communication difficulties and evaluates program progress in elements of service.

Maintains liaison with other programs concerning administrative policies, procedures, funds and human resources, and other services.

Supervises the maintenance of records and files.

Plans and attends meetings, and gives talks as directed.

Establishes procedures and supervises personnel to bring about maximum efficiency in providing the required administrative operations.

Prepares correspondence.

May assist the program administrator in preparation of annual budgets and in personnel and fiscal matters.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Six (6) years of professional supervisory experience in the operation of a community mental health clinic, center, hospital, or other mental health care facility.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE: " Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgement and make accurate and informed decisions. LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of principles and techniques of management, administration, and supervision.

Knowledge of administrative provisions of a community mental health program.

Knowledge of problems involved in administration of a community mental health program.

Ability to evaluate administrative policies and procedures.

Ability to evaluate information for and assist in preparation of budget requests.

Ability to read and interpret rules, laws, and regulations pertaining to activities of a community health program and to apply them to specific situations.

Ability to prepare correspondence and reports.

Ability to work effectively with supervisors, associates, and with heads of other units and others involved in community mental health services.

Ability to supervise the maintenance of records and files.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
