PROGRAM SPECIALIST ALCOHOL ABUSE ACTIVITIES
DEFINITION:
Under direction develops and implements programs of education,
information, prevention, and referral in the areas of alcohol
addiction/abuse and their related problems; does other related
duties as required

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Plans, develops, and implements programs of education,
information, prevention, and referral in the area of alcohol
addiction/abuse.
Reviews, studies, and analyzes current available information,
plans, services, and research projects and develops and
recommends guidelines, standards, and information references
applicable to related programs.
Represents the department and takes an active part in all inter-
and intradepartment activities related to such programs.
Develops and supervises a repository of information, technical
data, and visual aids for use in research and for general and
specialized distribution purposes.
May counsel alcohol dependent persons and affected family
members.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years experience and/or training involving the
treatment and/or rehabilitation of alcohol dependent persons
or in the prevention of alcoholism.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of problems faced by the alcoholic and the
corresponding affect on social, work, and family relationships.
Knowledge of and familiarity with NJ/federal alcohol laws, and
alcohol laws of neighboring states, and their implications with
regard to control, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of
alcohol abuse.
Knowledge of the scope of the alcohol abuse problem in
New Jersey.
Knowledge of economic, psychological, and sociological bases
of alcoholism.
Knowledge of the types of information and education
materials/programs required to reach various groups.
Knowledge of local community and other resources.
Ability to understand, analyze, interpret, and apply basic
law/regulations to specific situations.
Ability to make required surveys/studies, compile needed
information, and determine the particular type of assistance
needed.
Ability to recognize, understand, and act reasonably in the
presence of all phases of psychosocial deviant behavior and
attitudes.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative
reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
