ROAD INSPECTOR
DEFINITION:
Under direction, inspects the construction, reconstruction,
maintenance and repair of roads to bring about compliance
with plans and specifications; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Inspects the construction of roads to ensure that standards for
materials and workmanship are met.
Reports on the progress of construction projects.
Ensures that specifications for earthwork, cuts, fills, slopes, ditches,
rock excavations, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, catch basins,
manholes, concrete headwalls, concrete curbs, fine grading,
construction of concrete, bituminous macadam, gravel and bituminous
concrete pavements, spreading and rolling of stone, shoulders, and
guard rails, and erection and placement of signs are complied with
and that only permissible variations within allowable tolerances occur.
Inspects materials before use and obtains laboratory approval
prohibiting use of materials found to be substandard.
Takes samples of materials needed in the laboratory to
determine size, weight and grading of stone and sand used in
concrete work for pavements, and samples of other materials as
required.
By means of a straight edge and by visual inspection, sees that
a good riding surface is obtained.
Ensures that tools, machinery, and trucks are so used as to avoid
accidents.
Keeps records of the loads of distributing trucks reporting
gallonage, square yards penetrated or treated, rate per gallon,
temperature, and source of materials.
Prepares estimates of amounts of monies to be paid contractors
monthly.
Maintains records of labor, materials, and equipment used.
Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures followed
and materials used conform to specifications.
Discusses deviations from specified construction procedures,
plans, and specifications with contractor or construction supervisor
to ensure compliance with regulations and approved plans.
Helps to coordinate snow removal work.
Prepares daily reports indicating status of the work
in relation to plans and specifications.
Prepares reports.
Maintains essential records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information systems
used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in road construction and maintenance
work.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in
construction, reconstruction and maintenance of roads.
Knowledge of problems encountered in obtaining compliance
with plans and specifications and of methods used in reading
and interpreting plans and specifications.
Knowledge of procedures for taking samples to be used in
laboratory tests.
Knowledge of computing work performed.
Ability to check general field conditions.
Ability to read and interpret highway and bridge plans and
specifications.
Ability to determine quality of riding surface by using a straight
edge and visual inspection.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Ability to determine whether materials furnished comply with
specifications and to take steps necessary to bring about
compliance.
Ability to take and maintain a firm and correct stand when
controversies arise.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates,
contractors, and others concerned with the construction,
reconstruction, and maintenance of roads.
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
Ability to maintain essential records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
