Job Specification
SENIOR GREENSKEEPER
DEFINITION
Under direction, takes the lead over a small group of employees and
performs the more specialized maintenance work required for the proper
and efficient care of turf and land areas of a regulation golf course,
and/or performs the more specialized and difficult work on a
regulation golf course; operates specialized equipment designed for
golf course maintenance, does other related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs the more specialized tasks of maintenance necessary for the
proper care of tees, fairways, and greens.
Operates various types of power mower equipment to mow greens straight
and true.
Cuts roughs and fairways to the designated height exercising care not
to injure turf or shrubbery.
Sows seeds, replaces sod, removes weeds for the turf and sand traps,
rakes sandtraps, and may apply lime fertilizers, insecticides, and
fungicides in the prescribed amounts.
May take the lead over a group of men in top dressing, spiking, and
aerifying the greens.
Changes the pin location on the greens.
Uses the fairway leaf sweeper, removes refuse, and performs other
chores in order to keep the playing surface up to standards
established for the sport.
In absence of the Assistant Supervising Greenskeeper and Supervising
Greenskeeper, takes the lead and assumes responsibility over the
entire work crew.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in the care and maintenance of a
regulation golf course.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid
certificate as a commercial pesticide applicator or a commercial
pesticide operator issued by the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the
position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the specialized equipment and methods used in caring for
golf courses.
Knowledge of soil preparation for planting.
Knowledge of the measures required for maintenance of equipment, and
the proper use of fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides.
Knowledge of the operation of an underground irrigation system.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
