Job Specification

ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR OF RECREATION

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of a Supervisor of Recreation or other supervisor in a state or local institutional setting, organizes, supervises, and schedules a variety of recreational programs for mentally/physically/developmentally disabled, geriatric or incarcerated clients; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Organizes, supervises, and schedules recreation, leisure and related vocational/pre-vocational activities and functions at the institution.

Prepares recreational programs to teach clients to use their leisure time for the relaxation of body and mind, both in the institution and upon release to the community.

Provides opportunities for creativity, behavioral outlets, and learning/refinement of physical or social skills and participates directly in a variety of recreational, vocational/pre-vocational activities tailored to the client's needs, capabilities, interests, and characteristics.

Appoints and utilizes resident recreation assistants in all areas as scorers, referees, officials, equipment handlers and trains and supervises these assistants; takes part in activities with volunteers and other staff members, enlisting their support.

Prepares reports for the treatment team or staff reflecting the individual client's progress or regression in the program.

Makes arrangements for a variety of recreational activities which may include evening and weekend activities, or activities outside the institutional grounds.

Oversees the utilization and maintenance of all recreation equipment and facilities.

May transport or accompany participants to and from recreational areas or activities.

Evaluates each participant's recreational needs, limitations, and capabilities and modifies the individual's program of activities.

Develops and supervises community activities, arranges transportation, selects eligible residents, obtains required approvals, oversees resident conduct and well-being during these community activities.

May coordinate and monitor client's recreation fund where applicable.

May coordinate and schedule activities with other institutions.

Supervises and coordinates social functions.

Prepares and distributes recreation schedules.

Initiates the purchase of materials, equipment, and supplies required for the recreation program and related activities.

Verifies the receipt of goods or services and forwards invoices for payment.

Prepares appropriate paperwork to purchase materials, equipment, supplies, and services as necessary.

May plan and implement a coordinated indoor and outdoor program of recreation, leisure and related vocational/pre-vocational activities appropriate for mentally/physically/developmentally disabled geriatric or incarcerated clients.

Provides guidance and instruction to recreation and therapy support staff, and other employees involved in recreation, leisure, and related vocational/pre-vocational activities, and supervises their work performance.

Consults with Clinical Directors, Directors of Education, and other department heads to determine the types of physical exercises and recreation activities appropriate for clients having various types and degrees of disabilities or confinement.

May plan and schedule recreational and/or related vocational/ pre-vocational activities; coordinates activities with those of other institutional departments.

May plan and conduct special therapeutic activities under the guidance of medical and psychological staff.

Prepares reports of the recreation program.

Maintains records and files.

May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Five (5) years of professional experience planning, organizing and scheduling recreational or related vocational/pre-vocational activities in an institution, school, or community recreation program.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position. 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the principals and techniques of therapeutic physical education, recreation and related vocational/pre-vocational programs.

Knowledge of the emotional, social, psychological and personal problems of institutionalized clients.

Knowledge of the types of recreational, physical education, vocational/pre-vocational programs appropriate for mentally/physically/developmentally disabled, geriatric or incarcerated clients.

Knowledge of the problems encountered in the development and implementation of recreation and related vocational/pre- vocational programs for mentally/physically/developmentally disabled, geriatric or incarcerated clients.

Ability to analyze and apply current theories of physical education, recreation and related vocational/pre-vocational program planning.

Ability to analyze and apply current theories of physical education, recreation and related vocational/pre-vocational program planning.

Ability to provide assignments and instruction to support staff assisting in program activities and supervise their work performance.

Ability to comprehend the social, personal, psychological, and other problems of clients confined to institutions or centers.

Ability to apply current psychological concepts to recreation, physical education and related vocational/pre-vocational programs.

Ability to plan, organize, and implement courses of physical education, recreation, and related vocational/pre-vocational programs for a variety of mentally/physically/developmentally disabled, geriatric or incarcerated clients.

Ability to coordinate recreational therapy work with that of other units and with the medical, educational, and psychiatric staff.

Ability to prepare reports.

Ability to establish and maintain program records and files.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
