Job Specification

SEWER REPAIRER 2
 
DEFINITION
 
Under direction, performs the more difficult work involved in the
maintenance and repair of sewers and sewer equipment, and 
in clearing stoppages in main line and home sewer connections 
and/or takes the lead in a unit; does other related duties as required.

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not 
perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely, 
all duties performed on the job may not be listed.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Performs the more difficult tasks and/or takes the lead in a unit 
in tasks involved in cleaning storm water and sewer catch basins.

Repairs broken sewer lines.

Replaces worn parts.

Installs new sewer pipe.

May take the lead in a sewer maintenance unit and/or perform 
the more difficult work involving the clearing of stoppages.

Enters homes and locates sewer drains.

Inserts wire probes or pressure hoses designed to clear 
stoppages in home sewer line connections.

Operates sump pumps to clear flooded basements of water.

Enters main sewers and inserts sewer rodding lines or 
pressure hoses.

Clears home sewer connections or main sewer stoppages.

Operates sewer rodding or sewer dragging equipment.

Operates sewer equipment such as a sewer rodder, 
roto rooter, jetter and other small mechanical equipment.

Operates other motor vehicles when required.

Checks, services, and assists in making minor and emergency
adjustments and repairs in the field and in the repair shop.

Occasionally or incidentally performs manual and unskilled
laboring work.

Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.

May assist in supervision of lower level repairers.

Keeps simple records.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by 
the agency, office or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:
 
Two (2) years of experience in sewer installation or repair 
work and/or in varied plumbing work and/or in the operation 
and maintenance of sewer maintenance equipment.

LICENSE:

Appointees may be required to possess a valid water and/or
wastewater operator license of the appropriate class, depending 
on the permit level of the facility, issued by the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection.  The appointing 
authority is responsible for the verification of the license.

Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial 
Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the 
class and type of vehicle being operated.

NOTE:  The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess
the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class
and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing
Authority.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than 
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties 
of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of methods of repairing sewers.

Knowledge of methods and procedures used in locating and 
clearing sewer stoppages.

Knowledge of varied types of repair materials and their uses.

Knowledge of the operation of sewers and methods of 
cleaning them.

Knowledge of the methods of installing sewer pipes and lines.
 
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions.

Ability to analyze problems involving the operation of sewer
maintenance equipment.

Ability to organize and carry out fairly complex work projects.

Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and 
from demonstrations.

Ability to perform manual labor tasks as required.

Ability to perform routine, though sometimes complex, 
mechanical operations.

Ability to safely and efficiently operate sewer maintenance 
equipment.    

Ability to take the lead over lower level repairers.

Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and use needed equipment,
materials and supplies.

Ability to keep simple records.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the 
agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in 
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.  American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
forms of communication.
