SPEECH/HEARING SPECIALIST
DEFINITION:
Under direction of a supervisory official in a state department,
agency, or facility, plans and carries out a program to remedy
the speech, language, or hearing needs of clients with handicaps,
prescribes proper tests and procedures for therapy; participates
in research projects; administers tests and evaluates speech or
hearing performance; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Administers tests and evaluates speech or hearing performance.
Reviews individual clinic histories and consults with staff or other
personnel for structuring individual programs.
Trains children and adults to develop and improve their capacity
for speech, language, or hearing.
Applies clinical techniques of therapy and training to individual
patients with speech, language, or hearing impairments.
Serves as a member of the diagnostic staff for both inpatient
and outpatient programs.
Performs duties involved in the evaluation and treatment of
dysphagia.
Instructs classroom teachers in the management of patients
with speech or hearing impairments, and may assist in oral
language development programs when indicated.
Initiates referrals for otological, psychological, audiological,
medical, neurological, dental, and other special examinations.
Lectures to professional and other groups to promote better
understanding of the speech and hearing therapy programs.
Participates in research projects; prepares detailed reports
and summaries on completion of projects.
Prepares correspondence.
Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate, and comprehensive
patient progress and other reports of speech or hearing therapy
matters containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Maintains patient histories, records, and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
May be required to engage in lifting clients when working in
a setting which provides direct services to clients who are
nonambulant, or who are semiambulant and/or have severe
physical handicaps.
REQUIREMENTS
LICENSE:
Applicants must possess a current and valid license as a
Speech Pathologist/Audiologist issued by the Audiology and
Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Committee, Division of
Consumer Affairs, Department of Law and Public Safety.
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in applying the theory, principles,
and techniques of speech-language therapy or audiology.
NOTE: Appointees at Marie H. Katzenbach School for the
Deaf must be able to communicate effectively in the language of
the deaf, American Sign Language, sufficiently to perform the duties
of this position.
SPECIAL NOTE: Ability to physically lift, move, and position
clients as needed.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of theory, principles, methods, equipment, and
techniques of speech or hearing therapy and their application.
Knowledge of the methods used to select and administer routine
and special test.
Knowledge of the methods used to evaluate speech or hearing
performance of patients.
Ability to train children and adults in the development and
improvement of their capacities for speech, language or hearing.
Ability to select, administer, review, and evaluate results of
routine and special speech or hearing tests.
Ability to work effectively with other members of the staff to
implement the preparation of individual programs of therapy.
Ability to apply approved clinical techniques to individual
patients as required.
Ability to refer patients for psychological, medical, dental,
audiological, and other examination and/or treatment.
Ability to prepare correspondence.
Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and
informative patient progress and other reports containing
findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to maintain essential patient histories and program
records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
