SENIOR YOUTH GROUP WORKER
DEFINITION
Under direction, takes the lead over and works with other Youth
Group Workers engaged in planning, supervising, and conducting
individual and group activities designed to benefit juveniles
with behavioral problems; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Takes the lead over other Youth Group Workers.
Advises, directs, and works with other Youth Group Workers
engaged in organizing, supervising, and conducting various
activities for a group of juveniles with behavioral problems.
Advises and assists other Youth Group Workers in implementing
programs for juveniles designed to develop an improved sense of
responsibility and duty towards themselves and society.
Attends, participates in, and may conduct professional staff
meetings to plan individual and group counseling sessions to
discuss emotional and behavioral problems facing juveniles.
May assist juveniles in resolving personal problems by using
counseling techniques.
Consults with other agencies and parents when necessary.
Monitors and records individual and group behavior during planned
activities.
Prepares reports.
Maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with
Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology, or related fields.
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in counseling and guidance or in
work in the fields of teaching, social welfare, or medical social
services.
NOTE: Possession of a Master's degree in a related field
from an accredited college or university may be substituted for
one (1) year of indicated experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the psychological and social problems of juveniles.
Knowledge of social, economic, and psychological causes of
deviant behavior.
Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of government and private agencies that can afford help
in rehabilitating juveniles.
Knowledge of problems involved in dealing constructively with
personality disorders, social behavior, and social relationships.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
methods.
Ability to utilize counseling and guidance techniques to
understand individual limitations of juveniles.
Ability to interview juveniles who may be emotionally upset and
antagonistic.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative
reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
