Job Specification

SOCIAL WORKER JUVENILE REHABILITATION  

DEFINITION:

Under direction working with the juvenile court or related authorities, provides social work services to juveniles; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Gathers and evaluates social, historical, vocational, and educational background information on juveniles and their families to establish a plan for providing rehabilitative measures to the juvenile.

Works closely with concerned agencies and individuals in providing social services to juveniles.

Focuses attention of other professional staff members on factors which may have caused or are currently causing problems for juveniles.

Facilitates the systematic examination of theoretical rationales for change in the juvenile's environment which affect his/her behavior.

Works closely with the juvenile court and juvenile welfare system in providing social services.

Determines how and when to use other community mental health and juvenile welfare resources.

Provides individual and group counseling to juveniles.

Assists in the alleviation of any problems that the juvenile encounters while confined by discussing such problems with the juvenile and staff members.

Confers with agency staff members to further their understanding of significant social and emotional factors underlying the juvenile's behavior.

Discusses the juvenile's problem, behavior, and adjustment with parents.

Makes arrangements for medial and psychological examinations of juveniles.

Prepares reports.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units .

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Five (5) years of professional experience in social work involving child care.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

OR

Possession of a master's degree in social work from an accredited college or university.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the purposes, policies, standards, and procedures relevant to doing social work which involves the health, physical welfare, and social adjustment of juveniles.

Knowledge of the problems of socially, mentally, and/or physically maladjusted juveniles.

Knowledge of factors that cause social adjustment and behavioral problems for juveniles.

Knowledge of the problems encountered in collecting and analyzing factual information needed to pass upon individual cases, draw sound social conclusions, and base appropriate actions.

Knowledge of social case work methods and terminology.

Knowledge of the organization, objectives, and activities of varied types of public and private social agencies.

Knowledge of individual and group behavior.

Knowledge of individual and community health problems, and of the establishment and maintenance of case work and other records and files.

Ability to analyze laws, rules, regulations, and procedures, and to apply them with reasonable consistency to individual cases.

Ability to organize assigned social work and develop effective work methods.

Ability to counsel juveniles who have social adjustment and behavioral problems.

Ability to work harmoniously with associates, families, juveniles, and social organizations.

Ability to collect and make correct appraisals of factual information, and of social relations of juveniles and their families.

Ability to quickly identify the significant facts in an individual or family situation, and to weigh and evaluate those facts.

Ability to plan and execute programs for social readjustment of juveniles on the basis of findings. Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Ability to maintain essential records and files.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand speak understand aor communicate in English sufficiently to preform he duties of this position. America Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
