Job Specification

 HEAD COTTAGE TRAINING SUPERVISOR
 
 DEFINITION:
 
 Under direction of a supervisory cottage official, or other designated
 official in an institution in the Department of Human Services,
 supervises cottage personnel performing assigned nonprofessional
 programs in personal care, self-help and social training, recreation,
 cleanliness, and related programs designed to maintain the physical,
 mental, emotional health, and well- being of residents assigned to the
 facility; does related work as required.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Assigns, instructs, and supervises cottage personnel in the personal
 care of residents to ensure proper feeding, cleanliness, safety, and
 well-being of residents assigned to the cottage.

 Plans, organizes, and assigns the work of the organizational unit and
 evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the effective
 recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and disciplining of
 subordinates.

 Maintains an adequate food service program to ensure that food is
 properly arranged and served to residents.

 Undertakes physiotherapy, medical care, and other specific programs
 prescribed by specialists for individual members of the cottage
 population, in accordance with instructions given by authorized
 professional members of the institution.

 Develops and carries out an effective safety program to eliminate
 accident hazards to residents and employees in cottage areas.

 Supervises training programs in the cottage setting, designed to
 develop the individual resident's potential in the areas of self- help
 and social development.

 Supervises and takes the initiative in developing and carrying out
 recreation programs and activities suitable to the cottage population.

 Schedules and supervises work assignments of cottage employees 
 on each of the separate shifts.

 Assists in developing and conducting in-service training programs 
 for cottage life employees assigned to the facility.

 Explains and interprets the rules, regulations, and customs of the
 institution to cottage employees and residents.

 Assumes responsibility for order and discipline in the cottage,
 handles minor behavior problems, and refers those of a more 
 serious nature to a supervisory official.

 Receives visitors to cottage and escorts them in a courteous manner;
 responds to questions dealing with nonprofessional aspects of cottage
 life, and refers visitors to appropriate staff members for response to
 inquiries of a professional nature.

 Conducts inspections of assigned areas.

 Helps to establish standards of cleanliness and personal habits, and 
 carries out these standards through instructing residents.

 Reports serious or chronic problems to the administrative supervisor.

 Prepares concise information reports on cottage programs, activities,
 residents, and employees as required.

 Maintains records and files.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
 manual recording and computerized information systems used by
 the agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 Three (3) years of experience in the direct care of clients which 
 may include training or supervision in an institutional, hospital
 or residential setting.

 LICENSE:

 Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
 New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
 mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the training, and psychological problems likely to be
 encountered in acting as the person in charge of a cottage unit, in 
 a state institution for the developmentally disabled, on a twenty-four
 hour basis.

 Knowledge of the techniques involved in training individuals with
 varying degrees of developmental disabilities and physical handicaps
 and/or mental illness in areas of self-care and socially accepted
 behavior to the limits of the residents' potential.

 Knowledge of physical, mental, and emotional needs of developmentally
 disabled and/or mentally ill persons and of the procedures and methods
 required to provide adequately for such needs.

 Knowledge of the varied housekeeping, safety, and sanitation problems
 encountered in a cottage unit for developmentally disabled persons and
 of the procedures, methods, and equipment required for their solution.

 Ability to develop and initiate general and specialized programs in
 the cottage setting designed to maintain adequate standards of
 personal care, safety, and emotional well-being of developmentally
 disabled residents assigned to the unit.

 Ability to prepare effective work schedules and programs, provide
 assignments to individuals and groups, and to supervise the
 performance of their work.

 Ability to act as the disciplinary official of the cottage and to
 handle minor behavior problems among residents.

 Ability to supervise cottage housekeeping routines when required.

 Ability to resolve minor personnel problems.

 Ability to assist in developing and supervising an effective in-service
 training program for employees assigned to the cottage unit.

 Ability to interpret the institution's rules and regulations in a
 manner easily understood by employees and residents.

 Ability to handle emergency and potentially dangerous situations, 
 to take the prescribed measures necessary for the health, welfare,
 custody, and safety of residents, and to take and maintain a firm 
 and correct stand when differences of opinion arise among residents 
 or cottage employees.

 Ability to prepare accurate factual reports.

 Ability to maintain essential records and files.

 Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
 related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.
