Job Specification

WATER TREATMENT PLANT REPAIRER

  DEFINITION:

         Under direction cleans, services, maintains, and repairs water
   treatment plant pumps, valves, and other equipment; does related 
   work as required.

   NOTE: The definition and examples of work for this title are for
   illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title

   Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK:

         Adjusts, regulates, and makes major and minor repairs to alum
   and lime feeders, chemical feed machines and chlorinators,
   purification machines, water pumps, meter indicators, filters, flow
   meters, and other mechanical equipment comprising the deep well 
   pumps  and the water treatment plant.

         Makes routine and complex repairs to mechanical equipment
   including replacement of washers, gaskets, and packing.

        Repairs and replaces valves, fittings, and pipe sections.

         Makes general repairs to buildings including carpentry,
   replacement of broken windows, repair of concrete and other 
   walks, and the painting of walls, window screens, and storm 
   sashes.

        Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses needed tools,
   equipment, materials, and supplies.

         Assists in the installation, repair, and rebuilding of hydraulic 
   valves, cylinders, automatic pilot and control valves, and
   water and air regulators.

        Installs roller bearings in flocculator arms.

          Assists in the installation and maintenance of gear reduction
   drives.

         Operates a lathe, drill press, milling machine, shaper,
   grinder, or electric hammer and compressor.

        Does brazing, cutting, and arc welding.

   May be required to handle a variety of chemicals in the performance
   of various maintenance tasks.

         Keeps records of repairs made, time spent, and costs involved.

   Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
   and/or manual recording and computerized information systems 
   used by the agency, office, or related units.

   REQUIREMENTS:

        EXPERIENCE:

         One (1) year of varied experience in the installation, maintenance, 
   and repair of varied types of piping systems, motors, pumps, valves, 
   and metering devices.

        LICENSE:

         Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
   in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
   employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of
   the position.

   KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

             Knowledge of problems and procedures used in maintenance 
   and repair of water treatment plant equipment, pumps, valves, and 
   machinery.

              Knowledge of the skilled use and care of needed tools,
   materials, and supplies.

               Ability to operate, repair, and maintain water treatment
   plant mechanical equipment.

             Ability to diagnose motor troubles and overhaul motors.

             Ability to change oil and lubricate motors.

             Ability to rebuild motors and clean and wash equipment.

   Ability to work harmoniously with others.

              Ability to perform complex mechanical and manual
   operations.

             Ability to keep essential records.

   Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
   recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
   related units.

   Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
   sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
   Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
   communication.
