Job Specification

SOCIAL CASE WORK SUPERVISOR  

DEFINITION:

Under direction, assigns and supervises work of a group of Social Case Workers; performs office and field work required to conduct varied and special types of social investigations involving the collection, analysis, and recording of significant social facts, drawing sound conclusions from such facts, and basing appropriate social actions on the facts; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Assigns and supervises work of case workers and other social service staff.

Coordinates staff activities in providing counseling services to assist clients with varied personal problems.

Provides assistance through individual and group conferences to agency staff in analyzing case problems and improving their social service skills.

Evaluates staff performance and recommends appropriate personnel action to superior.

May conduct or direct staff development programs.

Represents agency in community or interagency activities.

Counsels clients individually or in groups on a planned or emergency basis.

Reviews case histories for accuracy and completeness.

Conducts difficult case investigations.

Provides advice to clients for improvement of living conditions or social problems.

Provides advice to clients as to schooling, drug problems, finances, recreation activities, health, and home relationships.

Gathers information regarding home life, schools, social agencies, relatives, and other matters.

Collects social information needed to make determinations on proposed social or financial assistance.

Prepares reports in the form of case entries.

Prepares correspondence in the course of duties.

Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Six (6) years of professional experience involving the collection, analysis and recording of significant social facts needed to identify and implement treatment plans geared towards the needs of clients with various social, mental, or physical problems.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

OR

Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in social work; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of problems encountered in dealing with various types of disadvantaged persons.

Knowledge of social case work methods and terminology.

Knowledge of counseling techniques.

Knowledge of community resources and programs available to assist with client needs.

Knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior.

Knowledge of individual and community health problems.

Ability to read and interpret laws, rules, regulations, and procedures.

Ability to apply laws, rules, regulations, and procedures to specific situations.

Ability to organize assigned social work and develop effective work methods.

Ability to provide assignments and instructions to Social Case Workers and other staff members.

Ability to provide staff with needed advice and assistance.

Ability to work harmoniously with associates, families, individuals, and social organizations.

Ability to collect and analyze social, financial, and other information needed to make determinations on assistance.

Ability to quickly learn significant facts in individual or family situations and weigh and evaluate such facts.

Ability to plan and execute programs for social readjustment.

Ability to maintain records and files.

Ability to prepare correspondence.

Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Ability to counsel clients regarding personal, economic, and social problems.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
