SENIOR PUBLIC HEALTH INVESTIGATOR
DEFINITION:
Under direction takes the lead over Public Health Investigators
conducting inspections and investigations of complaints received
by a Health Agency; does other related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Investigates complaints of alleged violations of the sanitary
code and local health ordinances.
Inspects alleyways for trash and litter to determine compliance
with local ordinances.
Investigates complaints of inadequate heat in apartments and
homes to determine violations of local ordinances.
Inspects for health violations within an assigned district;
reports violations to Sanitary Inspectors.
Inspects buildings for rodents and other health nuisances.
Distributes public health literature within the community.
May assist in taking dog census.
Prepares case histories and reports of investigations.
Answers inquiries and provides information relating to the
Health laws.
Provides testimony in court cases.
Takes the lead over Public Health Investigators.
Prepares routine correspondence.
Maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in conducting field
investigations including the gathering and compilation of data
and preparation of reports.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of
the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of interviewing techniques.
Knowledge of local and state health laws and standards, after
a period of training.
Knowledge of the methods used to investigate sanitary conditions.
Knowledge of the problems involved in the investigation of
sanitary conditions and the maintenance of public health
standards.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to read, interpret and apply public health rules and
regulations.
Ability to interview persons of varying backgrounds.
Ability to conduct inspections and investigations.
Ability to observe and analyze significant conditions.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
