TIRE SERVICE REPAIR
DEFINITION:
Under direction is responsible for repairing, removing, and
examining damaged and defective or flat tires of automobiles
and/or buses, trucks, and heavy equipment; may respond to road
calls to replace damaged tires on various automotive vehicles;
does other related duties.
NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Raises vehicles using various types of jacks, depending on the
types of vehicles being raised
Unbolts wheels, using lug wrench
Removes wheels from vehicles by hand, or when repairing heavy
equipment tires may use a power hoist
Locates puncture in tubeless tire by visual inspection or by
immersing inflated tire in water bath and observing air bubbles
emerging from puncture
Removes inner tubes from tire and examines tire casing for
defects, such as holes and tears
Glues tire patch over rupture in tire casing using rubber cement
Reassembles tire onto wheel and places wheel on balancing
machine to determine counter weights required balancing wheel.
Hammers required counterweights onto rim of wheels
Switches regular or snow tires
Seals puncture in tubeless tire by inserting adhesive material
and expanding rubber plug into puncture with use of appropriate
hand tools
Uses various tire tools or equipment to separate tires from
wheels
May be required to make road service repair on motorized
equipment that has flats
May be required to drive various motor vehicles on the road
Maintains records and files
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties
of the position.
Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial
Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the
class and type of vehicle being operated.
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess
required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class
and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
