Job Specification

 SENIOR CARPENTER

 DEFINITION

 Under direction, performs general carpentry work involved in  the
 layout,   construction,  maintenance,  and  erection  of   wooden
 structures  and structures made from materials used the  same  as
 wood;  works with various machines and hand tools common  to  the
 carpentry  trade; may prepare or work from sketches,  plans,  and
 specifications in accord with the building code or accepted trade
 practices; takes the lead over and gives assignments to at  least
 one  other  carpenter and/or provides technical advice/assistance
 to  journey level carpenters engaged in performance of a  variety
 of carpentry tasks; does other related duties as required.

 NOTE: The  examples of work for this title are for  illustrative
 purposes  only. A particular position using this  title  may  not
 perform  all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely,
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Takes  the  lead  over  one  or more  carpenters  in  installing,
 repairing,  and/or  making window frames/sashes,  screens,  trim,
 doors,  flooring, siding and sheeting, stairs, railings, porches,
 cabinets, and simple furniture.

 Makes  use  in construction tasks of any appropriate wood  joints
 such as dovetail, miter, and mortise and tenon.

 Uses  common  building  construction nomenclature  in  performing
 duties and giving instructions.

 Uses  such  items as headers, joists, lolly columns,  beams,  and
 sills.

 Makes time and materials estimates.

 Inspects work in progress and completed work.

 Gives assignments to other carpenters.

 Keeps records.

 Inspects,  analyzes, and offers advice on carpentry  work  to  be
 done.

 Gives advice to journey level carpenters regarding their work.

 Estimates amounts of materials/equipment needed for various 
 types of carpentry construction and maintenance work.

 Inspects,  analyzes,  and  offers  advice  on  work  involved  in
 repairing, installing, and/or making windows, frames and  sashes,
 screens,  doors,  interior/exterior trim,  flooring,  siding  and
 sheeting, stairs, railings, porches, roofing and the like.

 Repairs,  manufactures,  and installs  cabinets,  clothes  racks,
 wardrobes, furniture, and signs.

 Installs cribbing and forms for concrete.

 Erects scaffolds and operates a variety of woodworking machines.

 Prepares reports.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or  manual  recording and information  systems  used  by  
 the agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 Three and one-half (3-1/2) years of experience in carpentry 
 work involving a variety of layout, construction, maintenance, 
 and erection tasks.

 LICENSE:

 Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
 New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the
 position.

 LICENSE

 Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's 
 License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of 
 vehicle being operated.

 NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the 
 required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type 
 of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of problems involved in performing carpentry work.

 Knowledge  of  standard  tools,  materials,  methods,  practices,
 occupational   hazards,  and  safety  precautions   involved   in
 performing carpentry work.

 Ability to analyze carpentry problems.

 Ability  to understand, remember, and carry out oral and  written
 directions.

 Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.

 Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use
 equipment, materials, and supplies.

 Ability to give instructions and advice to other carpenters.

 Ability  to  utilize  various types of electronic  and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,  
 or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
 in English  sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
 American  Sign  Language or Braille may also be considered 
 as acceptable forms of  communication.
