Job Specification

 INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST

 DEFINITION:

 Under  direction conducts surveys of work sites to  identify  and
 evaluate work practices and environmental conditions which may be
 hazardous to the health and safety of workers; uses a variety  of
 equipment  to  take  samples  from  the  environment,  recommends
 controls  of  chemical,  physical,  and  biological  risks,   and
 develops  and  presents educational and training  programs;  does
 other related duties as required.

 NOTE: The  examples of work for this title are for  illustrative

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Conduct  surveys  at  work sites, identifies  and  evaluates  any
 possible  chemical,  physical,  and/or  biological  work  related
 hazards,  makes  recommendations for  control  of  such  existing
 hazards to protect the health and safety of employees.

 Performs  inspections in a full range of industries  in  a  given
 geographical area.

 Visits  industries, conducts walk-throughs to identify  potential
 health  hazards,  and  makes  analyses  for  presence  of   toxic
 materials;   where  potential  hazards  are  indicated,   selects
 measuring  instruments and takes samples  to  measure  hazard  to
 specific individuals.

 Determines  measurements  to be made  and  methods  to  be  used,
 calibrates  and  adapts  various  kinds  of  equipment,  such  as
 standard   spectrophotometers,  PH  meters,  gas  chromatographic
 apparatus, octave band analyzer, and so forth.

 Consults  with  and  advises  occupational  health  personnel  to
 institute  control  and  remedial  measures  for  hazardous   and
 potentially hazardous conditions and equipment.

 Collects  samples  of dust, gases, vapors, and other  potentially
 toxic materials for analysis using various equipment.

 Design   and   implement  inservice  courses,  seminars,   and/or
 workshops  for  health and hospital personnel  such  as  sanitary
 inspectors, public health nurses, and so forth.

 Recognizes  hazards  and  detects their development  promptly  to
 evaluate  their  seriousness  and  prescribe  methods  for  their
 elimination or control.

 Prepare  reports including observations, analysis of  safe  toxic
 limits, and recommendations for control and correction of hazards
 to higher authority.

 Conducts   a   background  review  of   the   industry   and   of
 characteristics of the work process, reviews applicable standards
 and requirements contained in compliance manual.

 Creates  and/or  maintains  a library and  technical  information
 center.

 Submits  recommendations on health problems  found  at  inspected
 industry,   provides  information  on  any  changes   in   health
 ordinances,  works with industries to implement  recommendations,
 and provides interpretation of health ordinances.

 Participates in plant educational meetings to instruct  employees
 in  matters  pertaining to occupational health and prevention  of
 accidents.

 Investigates  complaints  received from  employees  or  employers
 regarding  potentially hazardous work environment and  determines
 appropriate  test methods to use by observing employees  in  work
 setting.

 Maintains records, files, and reports.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or  manual  recording and information  systems  used  by  
 the agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EDUCATION:

 Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
 degree  in  the environmental, chemical, physical, or  biological
 sciences, engineering, industrial hygiene, or public health.

 EXPERIENCE:

 Two  (2)  years  of experience in conducting  investigations
 and/or   inspections   of  occupational  health   conditions   in
 industrial  and/or  government locations,  conducting  field  and
 laboratory  tests to determine worker exposure to  a  variety  of
 chemical,  physical, and biological factors, and  the  making  of
 recommendations for the prevention, elimination, and  control  of
 work induced illness.

 NOTE: Possession of a Master's degree in one of  the  avove
 areas may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
 
 LICENSE:

 Appointees  will  be required to possess a driver's  license
 valid  in  New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle,  rather
 than   employee  mobility, is necessary to perform the  essential
 duties of the  position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge  of  industrial  hygiene laws,  regulations,  concepts,
 principles, and practices applicable to the conduct of industrial
 hygiene inspections in a variety of industries.

 Knowledge  of industrial operations and processes, materials  and
 equipment used, and by products generated.

 Knowledge of methods of control for a variety of health  hazards,
 including toxic chemicals, dust, noise, radiation, and so forth.

 Knowledge of sampling strategies.

 Knowledge of the types and limitations of analytical methods.

 Ability to use of a variety of sampling instrumentation.

 Ability  to plan, initiate, and execute inspections and tests  of
 industries.

 Ability to prepare clear, sound, and accurate reports.

 Ability to draw conclusions from available data.

 Ability  to make recommendations, give specific information,  and
 detail analysis of facts.

 Ability to understand and interpret health ordinances.

 Ability  to  operate varied and sometimes complicated instruments
 and equipment.

 Ability  to  work  harmoniously  with  other  professionals   and
 supervisory authorities.

 Ability  to  utilize various types of electronic  and/or   manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,  
 or related units.

 Ability  to  read, write, speak, understand, and  communicate  
 in English  sufficiently  to perform the duties  of  this  position.
 American   Sign  Language or Braille may also  be considered  
 as acceptable forms of  communication.
