SUPERVISING PROPERTY CLERK
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises employees involved in the receiving,
registration, and custody of lost, stolen, abandoned and unclaimed
property coming into the possession of the police department or other
law enforcement agency; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises the receiving, registration and custody of all confiscated, lost
or stolen property.
Signs reports on articles presented by police officers, dates and numbers
reports according to location of stored items.
Keeps records on vouchers as to recovery, retention and safeguarding of
lost, stolen, abandoned or unclaimed property.
Sets up auctions on bicycles and miscellaneous items.
Responsible for maintaining continuity of evidence.
Responsible for properly handling money received from auctions and
found money which is periodically turned over to the County Treasurer.
Maintains and replenishes an inventory of all stationery supplies stored
in the Property Room.
Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.
Prepares requisitions and various reports.
Supervises the destruction of weapons, drugs, records and old badges
authorized for destruction.
May be compelled to testify in court regarding receipt of evidence.
Guides, instructs and assigns work to staff.
Compiles statistical and other data.
Maintains essential records and files.
Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or
related unit.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) year of clerical experience involving the receipt, recording,
storage and release of property, evidence, supplies or equipment.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of work involving the obtaining, recording, safeguarding,
and issuing of varied types of equipment, materials and supplies.
Ability to comprehend established office routines, rules and regulations
of a complex nature.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.
Ability to provide guidance, assignments and instructions to staff.
Ability to supervise the maintenance of suitable records and files.
Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
