COUNSELOR JUVENILE FAMILY CRISIS INTERVENTION
DEFINITION:
Under direction provides juveniles and their families with
counseling, guidance, or referral assistance to stabilize the
immediate juvenile-family crisis and to ameliorate interfamilial
crisis-provoking conditions and divert the juvenile-family crisis
from court proceedings; does other related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Responds immediately to referrals, complaints, or other information
regarding a possible juvenile-family crisis; interviews concerned
parties and obtains necessary information and assesses situation.
Provides guidance and counseling to juveniles and families during
crisis intervention.
Refers non-crisis situations to appropriate agency.
Conducts on-site visits to access and stabilize the situation.
Monitors and reassesses stabilized situations.
Refers cases involving espousal abuse or suspected child
abuse or neglect to appropriate agency.
Attempts to develop a consensual alternative living arrangement
for a juvenile involved in a crisis situation when warranted.
Refers cases to the court for adjudication or out-of-home
placement when the crisis is not abated despite intervention
services.
Makes arrangements to meet with the family to assess the
nature of the problem and identify needed services.
Prepares a family agreement plan which may include referrals
to appropriate counseling, additional follow-up diagnostic work,
identification of other services.
Monitors family agreement plans to determine that terms and
conditions are met.
Receives referrals from a variety of sources for crisis intervention.
Prepares reports and maintains files and records.
Provides crisis intervention data and other information as
requested to the Administrative Office of the Courts.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information
systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited college or university with
a Bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences.
EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience providing guidance and
counseling to youth and their families.
NOTE: A Master's Degree in one of the behavioral
sciences may be substituted for the educational requirement.
NOTE: A Master's degree in one of the behavioral
sciences may be substituted for one (1) year of experience
when not utilized to fulfill the educational requirement.
LICENSE
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the techniques used to counsel individuals
exhibiting emotional or behavioral problems.
Knowledge of interviewing techniques.
Knowledge of community services and agencies likely
needed for juvenile-family crisis intervention.
Knowledge of the crisis counseling methods and techniques.
Knowledge of the social, economic and other factors
responsible for juvenile-family crisis situations.
Knowledge of the family court system.
Knowledge of traditional role of the family and the
problems encountered when family relationships
deviate from this traditional role.
Knowledge of the signs of child abuse or neglect.
Ability to assess crisis situations involving youth and families.
Ability to provide guidance and counseling.
Ability to identify the social and other services needed
by clients involved in crisis counseling.
Ability to select appropriate resources for supplemental or
substitute family care and providing services related to their use.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships with those interested or involved in the work
of the program.
Ability to develop and monitor family agreement plans.
Ability to collect and analyze information about individuals
and families and assess problems.
Ability to identify and define family problems.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals of varying
backgrounds.
Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
Ability to conduct on-site visits and interviews.
Ability to establish effective therapeutic relationships
with clients.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate
in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
