Job Specification

SUPERVISOR, PUBLIC WORKS

 DEFINITION

 Under direction, supervises employees engaged in construction,
 operation, maintenance, and repair of multiple public works facilities
 such as streets, sewer or water service, sanitation, parks, sewage or
 water treatment plants, or other public works operations; may be
 required to operate, check, service, and make minor repairs to trucks
 and other maintenance and construction equipment; does other related
 duties as required.

 NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Supervises and performs loading, unloading, and applying of sand and
 street repair materials, in cutting brush and mowing grass, and in
 emptying refuse containers, loading refuse, and disposing of refuse.

 Supervises employees engaged in installing, maintaining, and repairing
 water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other equipment in
 sewage and/or water treatment plants and other related facilities.

 Removes water meters, dismantles and assembles water meters, 
 and takes water readings.

 Operates, checks, services, and makes minor repairs to trucks,
 tractors, road graders, compressors, snow plows, ground hogs, 
 grass cutters, and other road and street equipment.

 Supervises employees engaged in installation, painting, repair, 
 and maintenance of road and street signs.

 Ensures that safety precautions are taken to protect the public from
 injury during repair activities.

 Inspects and checks completed work to determine if desired 
 objectives are achieved.

 Provides instruction and guidance to employees.

 Performs special assignments.

 Prepares reports with recommendation as appropriate.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by 
 the agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 Four (4) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and/or
 repair of streets, sewer, water, sanitation or other public work
 facilities or similar heavy construction.

 LICENSE:

 A license as a Wastewater/Water Supply Operator of the
 appropriate classification (water treatment, water distribution,
 wastewater treatment, wastewater collection) issued by the 
 New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection may 
 be required.

 Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
 in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's
 License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of
 vehicle being operated.

 NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the
 required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type
 of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of procedures, materials, and tools used in cleaning,
 maintaining, and repairing streets, sewers, water, sanitation
 facilities, sewage plant equipment and pumps, and water treatment
 plant equipment.

 Ability to direct subordinates, provide them with advice/assistance
 when difficult and unusual problems arise, and check their work to see
 that proper procedures are followed and desired objectives are
 achieved.

 Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.

 Ability to maintain records.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
 and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.
