Job Specification

 GENERAL SUPERVISOR WATER

 DEFINITION

 Under direction, supervises and coordinates water/wastewater related 
 programs, activities and staff through subordinate supervisors; does 
 other related work.

 NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Assists in developing a suitable work program for the operation,
 construction, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and
 transmission system.

 Assigns work to supervisors and supervises the installation of main
 line extensions, hydrants, gate valves, and other water service 
 equipment.

 Supervises lower level supervisors and others engaged in the
 installation, renewal, and repair of consumer's service pipes, meters,
 and other water service equipment.

 Procures required materials and supplies and maintains a proper
 inventory.

 Supervises the preparation of clear, accurate, and informative
 reports.

 Establishes and maintains needed records and files.

 Reviews work orders, plans work assignments and schedules, and
 establishes priorities.

 Reviews operational reports to resolve problems, ensure minimum 
 costs and prevent delays in completion of projects.

 Develops and revises standard working procedures and observes 
 workers in order to ensure compliance with standards.

 Initiates personnel actions, and handles other personnel matters

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the 
 agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 Three (3) years of supervisory experience in the installation,
 repair, and maintenance of water mains, pipes, valves, hydrants, 
 and other water service equipment.

 LICENSE:

 NOTE:  Applicants may be required to possess a valid
 wastewater/water system operator’s license(s) of the appropriate 
 class issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental 
 Protection.

 Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
 New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the proper procedures used to repair water mains, 
 pipes, and other water service equipment.

 Knowledge of the methods of opening and closing streets and the 
 safety precautions involved.

 Knowledge of the varied types of tools used in the construction,
 maintenance, and repair of water installations.

 Knowledge of supervisory techniques.

 Ability to analyze and resolve the problems involved in the
 installation, maintenance, and repair of water service apparatus.

 Ability to inspect the work and procedures followed for adherence 
 to operational and safety standards.

 Ability to work cooperatively with associates and subordinates.

 Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work 
 methods.

 Ability to plan and schedule water service maintenance and repair
 operations, and direct work processes.

 Ability and give suitable work assignments, instructions, and guidance
 to subordinate supervisors.

 Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports on
 the activities of the units.

 Ability to maintain records and files.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
 and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.
