DRAFTING TECHNICIAN/ENGINEERING AIDE
DRAFTING TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Under direction, performs routine drafting work involved in the
preparation of drawings, maps, charts, graphs, sketches, and plans;
does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Receives instructions and selects appropriate templates or compass for
making arcs, curves, circles, and ellipses.
Draws angles with drafting machine or through the use of T-square and
triangles and determines the size, spacing, and arrangement of
dimensions and notes.
Plot and draw graphs, charts, and diagrams.
Makes standard arithematic calculations in determining scales and line
weights of drawings to be reduced for publication and reports and in
converting drawings from one scale to another.
From sketches, draws floor plans of buildings, determining size,
spacing, and arrangement of freehand lettering according to a given
scale.
Draws simple land profiles from previously reduced survey notes and
structural dimensions furnished.
From a marked up print showing changes, revises the original drawings
of a plumbing system, increasing or decreasing the diameter of the
pipes.
Performs the routine drafting work involved in plotting alignments of
roads from construction plans and field notes.
Draws widths and types of pavements.
Draws numbers and indexes bridges over streams, railroad overpasses
and underpasses, grade crossings, and topographical features.
Prepares sketches and charts.
Inks titles on property maps and construction plans and varied types
of field notes.
Does mechanical lettering.
Draws and/or revises tax maps and other maps requiring the use of
various colored ink and protractors.
May perform field work requiring use of transit and rod to verify
information prior to revising map of underground utilities.
Prepares clear, accurate, and complete working plans and detail
drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes according to
specified dimensions.
Makes final sketches of proposed drawings checking dimensions of parts
and making any adjustments or changes necessary or desired.
Inks in all lines and letters on pencil drawings as required.
Draws charts for representation of statistical data.
Checks non-complex mathematical calculations for accuracy.
Maintains established relevant records and files where selection and
classification of data does not require difficult decisions and where
procedures are routinized.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENT
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of drafting techniques and instruments used in preparing
detailed sketches, drawings, charts, and plans.
Knowledge of procedures for reducing, enlarging, tracing, lettering,
and filing of maps, drawings, charts, sketches, graphs, and plans.
Knowledge of symbols and terminology used in drafting work.
Ability to analyze routine drafting problems.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions.
Ability to learn quickly from written and oral explanations and from
demonstrations.
Ability to prepare engineering and/or architectural drawings that are
neat, accurate, and logically arranged, utilizing the methods and
techniques of drafting.
Ability to make mathematical computations using standard tables and
formulas.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.

ENGINEERING AIDE
DEFINITION
Under direction, performs routine, repetitive, and noncomplex field
and office work as a chairman and roadman, and assists in instrument
operation, makes the less difficult mathematical calculations, and
reduces level notes; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Does chaining and measuring with a tape.
Runs a level rod, drives stakes, clears survey lines, cares for
equipment, and sees that taping instruments are clean and well oiled.
Cuts brush while working in a survey party and reduces level notes.
Plots, inks, and calculates cross sections, makes simple mathematical
calculations and does routine drafting and tracing.
Inspects and checks earthwork, and checks and records loads of
materials taken from pits.
May assist in several operations at the batching plant including the
sampling of materials, the making of simple screen and moisture tests,
and the preparation of samples to be sent to the laboratory.
Maintains necessary records.
