INSPECTOR TRAINEE, MOSQUITO EXTERMINATION
DEFINITION
Under direction and close supervision as a trainee and productive
worker, performs work involved in learning to locate and recognize
mosquito breeding areas; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs visual inspection of mosquitos in their hiding or breeding
areas (such as ditches, private roads, or other similar areas where
stagnant water exists) to site evidence of their presence.
Answers to complaints and inquiries from the public by giving out
basic information on government extermination efforts, insect habits,
and other related topics.
Learns and applies approved chemicals and biological controls using
protective clothing such as gloves, face masks, goggles, and
respirators according to specific manufacturers= directions.
Learns to select and apply different chemicals in designated areas
according to appropriate methods and techniques using manual or power
equipment such as pressurized spray pumps.
Drives truck or other automotive vehicle and follows road map or
directions to answer a complaint or to reach area that needs
inspection or fumigation.
Learns to weigh, measure, and mix chemicals and mediums according to
specific directions to prepare commonly used insecticides for insects
such as mosquitos.
Cuts brush using power saw or hand cutting tools to aid in the general
effort to control and exterminate mosquitos.
Drives truck and uses power spraying equipment to apply chemicals to
designated area.
Collects samples of insect larva for identification by supervisor or
specialist.
May perform minor maintenance work on extermination equipment such as
oil change, replacement of belts, and minor repairs to maintain
equipment in working order.
May perform unskilled laboring work when there is a lull in inspection
and extermination assignments.
May be assisted by unskilled helpers to carry out various assignments
such as spraying, loading equipment on trucks, and so forth.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Ability to understand information about insects, mosquitos in
particular, including basic physical characteristics in various stages
of development, habits, living or breeding patterns, and their
breeding areas.
Ability to identify characteristics and purposes of commonly used
insecticides and to select the appropriate ones after a period of
training.
Ability and skill to weigh, measure, and mix chemicals and mediums
according to specific directions.
Ability and skill to cover breeding areas with chemicals while
avoiding contamination to food and water sources and danger to people.
Ability and skill to use manual or power spraying and fumigating
equipment.
Ability to lift and/or carry materials and equipment weighing over 30
pounds.
Ability and skill in carrying out inspection to detect areas needing
spraying and fumigation.
Ability to keep records of areas and type of chemical or biological
controls used.
Ability and skill in following road directions and maps.
Ability to follow instructions on work methods and techniques.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.

ADVANCEMENT
Appointees who successfully complete the 12-month training period will
be eligible for advancement to the title Inspector, Mosquito
Extermination for which they have been trained.
The inability of an employee in this title to attain a level of
performance warranting advancement to a title listed above shall be
considered as cause for separation.
