Job Specification

 INVESTIGATOR, COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

 DEFINITION

 Under  direction,  investigates reported cases  of  one  or  more
 communicable  diseases; locates and advises  exposed  persons  to
 obtain  medical treatment and to prevent further  spread  of  the
 disease; does other related duties as required.

 NOTE: The  examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes  only.  A particular position using this title  may  not
 perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely,
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 NOTE:  Appointments may be made to positions requiring bilingual skills.

 02207- Bilingual in Hindi and English.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Locates  and interviews exposed persons using information obtained
 from records of state or local public health departments and from
 individuals already under treatment for communicable disease.

 Advises  persons  to  obtain treatment from a private physician  or
 public health clinic.

 May  take  blood  samples  to assist in  identifying  the presence  of
 disease in a suspected victim.

 Questions  exposed persons to obtain information concerning  other
 persons who may have also received exposure.

 Conducts   follow-up  interviews  with  patients  and   suspected
 carriers.

 Writes report of activities and findings.

 Visits  physicians, laboratories, and community health facilities
 to stimulate reporting of cases of communicable disease.

 Supplies   individual  with  information  on  programs,   diseases,
 treatment, fees, and so forth to help in the general effort  to
 educate,  inform,  and  encourage  continuation  in  a  treatment
 program  (for example, immunization, communicable disease control
 measures).

 May  take samples of bodily fluids such as urine or other  specimens
 which do not involve invasive or specialized procedures.

 Takes  appropriate  action to ensure referral  and  follow-up  by
 other  agencies or health personnel such as a physician  or  public
 health nurse.

 Prepares  reports on all phases of investigation  which  includes
 information regarding individuals contacted and referrals made,
 activities and findings.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or  manual  recording and information  systems  used  by  the
 agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

      EXPERIENCE:

      One (1) year of investigatory experience.

      LICENSE:

 Appointees  will  be required to possess a driver's  license
 valid  in  New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle,  rather
 than  employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
 of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of basic field investigation procedures.

 Ability  to  explain procedures and information relating  to  the
 health program.

 Ability  to  interview and evaluate information  gathered  in  an
 interview.

 Ability  to  use  tact and courtesy when dealing  with  different
 types of people.

 Ability  to  report  facts  accurately in  a  concise,  objective
 manner.

 Ability to follow-up on information leads to locate individuals.

 Ability  to  utilize  various types of electronic  and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,  or
 related units.

 Ability  to  read, write, speak, understand, and  communicate  in
 English   sufficiently  to  perform  duties  of  this   position.
 American  Sign  Language or Braille may  also  be  considered  as
 acceptable forms of  communication.
