Job Specification

TELEPHONE SYSTEM INSTALLER AND REPAIRER

DEFINITION:

Under direction, installs, maintains and repairs telecommunications 
systems and equipment; repairs conduit systems, cables and wiring 
systems; troubleshoots problems with wiring systems; installs cables 
and wiring systems; schedules use of equipment and facilities and 
maintenance or repair; estimates necessary quantity of time, costs, 
materials or personnel for the accomplishment of assignments or 
goals; and recommends the purchase of new and replacement 
materials, equipment, parts, and supplies; does other related duties 
as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Sets up, rearranges, or replaces routing and dialing equipment.

Inspects and services equipment, wiring, and phone jacks.

Repairs or replaces faulty, damaged, or malfunctioning equipment.

Tests repaired, newly installed, or updated equipment to ensure 
that it works properly.

Adjusts or calibrates equipment settings to improve performance.

May support the Avaya phone network or other phone systems.

Repairs servers, PC’s and telephone sets.

Verifies that quantity and type of item ordered matches invoice.

Schedules the use of equipment or facilities.

Schedules maintenance or repair.

Estimates necessary quantity of time, costs, materials or personnel 
for the accomplishment of assignments or goals.

Recommends the purchase of new and replacement materials, 
equipment, parts and supplies.

Distributes materials, equipment, parts or supplies.

Adjusts stock levels for anticipated needs.

Records the use of materials, equipment, parts or supplies.

Obtains current price quotes for special purchases.

Drives work vehicles to job sites.

Repairs conduit and wiring systems

Troubleshoots problems with wiring systems.

Installs and tests wiring systems.

Operates cherry picker, ladder, platform, or boom trucks.

Lubricates equipment, parts, systems or subsystems.

Sends (dispatches) materials and equipment to construction sites.

Installs and repairs overhead and/or underground cables.

Arranges materials, equipment, parts and supplies for inventory 
control.

Consults with vendors or contractors.

Provides technical information.

Follows established safety guidelines and procedures.

Maintains essential records and files.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by 
the agency office or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of experience in work involving repair of electrical
and electronic components and the installation and repair of
overhead and underground cables.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid 
in New Jersey only if operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the procedures and equipment used to install, 
maintain and repair telecommunications systems and equipment.

Knowledge of procedures for installing conduit, cables and wiring 
systems.

Knowledge of procedures used to test wiring systems.

Knowledge of lubricants and their application.

Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.

Knowledge of inventory control.

Ability to install and repair overhead and underground cables.

Ability to repair servers, PC’s and telephone sets.

Ability to operate cherry picker, ladder, platform or boom trucks.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to follow written orders, directions or plans.

Ability to operate hand and power tools such as wrenches, 
screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, drills, and tools associated 
with electrical conduit and wiring work.

Ability to troubleshoot problems with wiring systems.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the 
agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate 
in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
