Job Specification

 SUPERVISOR RECYCLING OPERATIONS

 DEFINITION:

 Under direction, supervises employees at a recycling facility
 engaged in the maintenance, adjustment, and operation of
 machinery used to process solid waste material for reuse, and in
 the operation of mechanical equipment to transport, mix, screen,
 separate, aerate, and arrange a variety of substances to produce
 compost material; does other related duties.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not
 perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely,
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Supervises and works with a crew engaged in the maintenance and
 operation of machinery used to shred, bale, crush and/or compact
 solid waste material for reuse.

 Supervises the preparation of recyclables for market or
 distribution.

 Supervises the operation of recycling/composting equipment.

 Supervises equipment inspection.

 Prepares work schedules.

 Supervises staff in the operation of mechanical equipment (i.e.
 front-end loaders, forklifts and bulldozers).

 Analyzes equipment malfunctions, diagnoses problems, and arranges
 for repair.

 Adjusts mechanical parts of machinery.

 Supervises the preventative maintenance and adjustments to
 machinery and equipment.

 Enforces safety precautions for the protection of employees and
 the public.

 Inspects completed work.

 Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and
 evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the
 effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and
 disciplining of employees.

 Trains new employees.

 Supervises the proper and safe operation of front-end loaders,
 trucks, street sweepers, and other related equipment.

 Supervises staff repairing and maintaining recycling/composting
 equipment.

 Supervises facility maintenance.

 Prepares and maintains records of work processed, equipment and
 materials used, and time spent on operations.

 Requisitions needed materials and supplies.

 Prepares reports.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
 agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      EXPERIENCE:

      Four (4) years of experience in work involving the operation
 and maintenance of gasoline or diesel powered construction
 equipment to dig, excavate, grade, move, or transfer materials
 or, in the operation of industrial equipment or machinery, one
 (1) year which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

      LICENSE:

      Appointees will be required to possess a valid Commercial
 Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class
 and type of vehicle being operated.

 KNOWLEDGES AND ABILITIES

 Knowledge of the equipment and methods used transport and collect
 solid waste and recyclable materials.

 Knowledge of the methods used in the routine maintenance of
 equipment and machinery.

 Knowledge of the methods used to process solid waste material for
 reuse.

 Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and
 evaluate performance.

 Ability to supervise preventative maintenance and adjustments to
 machinery and equipment.

 Ability to prepare work schedules.

 Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and use needed equipment,
 materials, and supplies.

 Ability to inspect equipment and machinery and identify problems.

 Ability to prepare reports.

 Ability to maintain records and files.

 Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
 manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
 office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
 English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
 American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
 acceptable forms of communication.
