MARINA WORKER
DEFINITION:
Under supervision, assists in the repair and maintenance of
a public marina; assists in the operation of a marina including
assisting the visiting public; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Maintains, repairs, cleans, and paints the marina facilities
including buildings, berths, docks, bulkheading, pilings, etc.
Operates a small launch, skiff, or other boat requiring no crew.
Oprates the necessary equipment, and performs related work to
launch, retrieve, move, clean, and store boats.
Assists in operating the necessary equipment and performing
related work to remove silt and sand buildup in the marina and
the channel.
Assists in maintaining, repairing, cleaning, lubricating, and
adjusting marina vessels and equipment.
Cares for, and maintains the grounds including seeding, watering
fertilizing, trimming and mowing of lawns; planting, watering, trimming
and fertilizing of shrubs and plants; removing trash and related
activities.
Assists boat owners in handling of boats, and maintains good
relations with permittees and park visitors.
Assists permittees in safeguarding of boats berthed in the marina
against theft, fire, storms, or accidental damage.
Fills boat fuel tanks and does related work as required.
Pumps out marina sanitation devices.
Collects fuel dock sales proceeds and rental payments from boat
owners.
Issues proper receipts, keeps payment records, and deposits funds.
Stores and safeguards equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
Prepares requisitions for necessary materials, tools, and supplies.
Maintains essential records.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in work related to the maintenance,
repair, and operation of a marina or harbor facility which shall have
included the handling of small boats.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
NOTE: Appointee must possess a valid motorboat operator's
license issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Commission.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the procedures, equipment, materials, and supplies
used in maintaining, repairing, and cleaning marina facilities.
Knowledge of the procedures of launching, retrieving, moving,
cleaning, storing, and safeguarding boats.
Knowledge of the methods of operating small launches, skiffs
and other boats.
Knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and practices
relating to boating safety.
Knowledge of the procedures for refueling boats and pumping
out marine sanitation devices.
Knowledge of proper procedures for storing and safeguarding
equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
Ability to operate marina equipment including a marine travel
lift, and a marine forklift in accordance with the operator's manual,
safety regulations, and other instructions.
Ability to paint buildings, docks, and other marina structures and
facilities.
Ability to service and maintains small boats.
Ability to do the necessary grounds keeping work.
Ability to organize buildings and grounds maintenance and
repair work, and to develop effective work methods.
Ability to work effectively with coworkers, associates, supervisors,
and that portion of the public who utilize the marina and its facilities.
Ability to take a courteous, firm, and correct stand with permittees
and the public in order to collect payments, rentals, and fees, and/or
to maintain safe boating regulations procedures.
Ability to write receipts, complete simple reports, keep records of
payments and make bank deposits.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms
of communication.
