Job Specification

ATTORNEY GENERAL

DEFINITION

As head of the Department of Law and Public Safety, is responsible for the administration of eight 
Divisions, the Office of the Attorney General, the Racing Commission and the Violent Crimes 
Compensation Board; is responsible for the formulation of rules and regulations to insure proper 
law enforcement; and for the integration of staff services; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: 

Has charge of the work programs and staff of the Department of Law and Public Safety, and takes 
the measures required to insure proper law enforcement and the integration of staff services.

Establishes and directs the carrying out of policies and procedures, formulates rules and 
regulations to insure proper law enforcement.

Directs the Office of the Attorney General and provides analyses and plans for all Departmental 
operations; directs policy and procedures studied; coordinates fiscal and personnel policies; 
directs the preparation of budgets.

Directs the programs and staff of the Division of Law charged with provision of legal advice to all 
State departments, agencies and offices, including County Boards of Elections and Taxation and 
Sheriffs and for general supervision over county prosecutors.

Directs the work programs and staff of the Division of Civil Rights charged with the administration 
of the investigation of complaints alleging discrimination in employment, public accommodations,
or housing against persons because of their race, creed, color, natural origin, ancestry, liability for 
service in the Armed Forces or, age.

Directs the administration of the Division of the State Police which has full police powers and is 
authorized to enforce any law or ordinance anywhere in the State.

Directs the licensing of manufacturers and wholesale distribution of alcoholic beverages and the 
supervision of municipalities in retail licensing in the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Directs the administration the Division of Criminal Justice which includes the Police Training 
omission and the office of the State Medical Examiner.

Directs the administration of the Division of Motor Vehicles charged with, the responsibility for the 
enforcement of the motor vehicle and traffics laws of New Jersey, the conduct of examinations for 
new drivers,  the annual inspection of motor vehicles, and studies to provide greater safety on 
roads.

Directs the administration of the Division of Consumer Affairs which includes the Professional 
Boards, the Bureau of Securities, the Office of Consumer Protection and Office of Weights and 
Measures.

Directs the administration of the Division of Systems end Communications. 

REQUIREMENTS:

LICENSE: 

Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State' of New Jersey.

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation 
of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems 
used by the agency, office or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the 
duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable 
forms of communication.
